Review: Never Never: Part Two (Never Never #2) by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

Never Never part twoTitle: Never Never: Part Two
Author: Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher
Series: Never Never #2
Rating: 5 stars
Genres: Romantic Suspense

“Never forget that I was your first real kiss. Never forget that you’ll be my last.
And never stop loving me between all of them.
Never stop, Charlie.
Never forget.”

Silas races against time as more truths unravel, while others twist tighter together. And now, the stakes are higher as Silas’ control slips and others begin to point fingers. Charlie is in trouble and he must be the one to bridge the chasm between their past and their present. Because somewhere between I love yous and Never Nevers and Never Agains, a truth they can’t imagine, beckons to be found.

“Where are you, Charlie?”

My Review:
I really love Silas and Charlie and some things are starting to make sense though it’s still very mysterious. My only complaint is regarding the length, it was way too short, and why is it taking so long to release the next installment? I really feel if you are going to serialize a story in this way then you should release a new installment every month. Still excellent though and I’m anxiously awaiting the next one.

My name’s shouted on rooftops.
It’s written on bras, bathroom stalls, hell my name is everywhere. To say my name is to experience an orgasm without ever leaving your house.
My name?
Zane “Saint” Andrews.
I’m sex.
I’m a rock god.
I’m also a virgin.
What they don’t know won’t kill them right? Give the people what they want. And what they want is the idea of me; the pleasure they gain at listening to my song and knowing without a doubt I’m talking about them and only them.
It worked for a while.
Until a nerdy girl with glasses falls at my feet, literally, and suddenly I don’t want to be Saint anymore, what I want? What I really need?
Is to be kept.
By her.

Blog Tour: Hitched by Kendall Ryan

Today is my stop during the blog tour for Hitched by Kendall Ryan! I share my review of this book today with you and there are some teaser pictures.

hitched 1Title: Hitched: Volume One
Author: Kendall Ryan
Series: Imperfect Love #1
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Rating: 5 stars

Marry the girl I’ve had a crush on my whole life? Check.

Inherit a hundred-billion-dollar company? Check.

Produce an heir… Wait, what?

I have ninety days to knock up my brand-new fake wife. There’s only one problem—she hates my guts.

And in the fine print of the contract? The requirement that we produce an heir.

She can’t stand to be in the same room with me. Says she’ll never be in my bed.

But I’ve never backed down from a challenge and I’m not about to start now.

Mark my words—I’ll have her begging for me, and it won’t take ninety days.

On the heels of her smash hit and New York Times bestselling SCREWED series, Kendall Ryan brings you HITCHED, a romantic comedy that delivers heart and heat. A NYC playboy turned business mogul has ninety days to win over the woman he’s always desired in order to save his father’s company. One tiny problem: She hates his guts.

My Review:
Sizzling hot chemistry, wicked, witty banter, conniving families, and a corporate world in meltdown mode, this book was totally drool-worthy, and I lapped it right up. Kendall Ryan has delivered in spades with this new series. I am already salivating at the prospect of what’s coming next, and after that ending? Damn, I need the next installment RIGHT NOW.

I think I’m supposed to hate Noah but I totally loved him. He is loud, obnoxious, and totally inappropriate at times, but also an absolute sweetheart, with a genuine fondness for Olivia, and a fervent desire to protect the business their fathers built and ensure the employees have a future to look forward to. He’s also sexy as sin. I don’t know how Olivia ever thought she could resist him.

They have both secretly harbored crushes on each other since their teenage years but neither will admit it yet. Their hysterical back-and-forth banter made me laugh out loud and Noah’s persistent attempts at seduction definitely raised my blood pressure.

Olivia is the perfect modern-day career woman. Driven and hard-working, she is determined to turn the business around. She is starting to realize that Noah has the same goals and ambitions and that they need each other in order to bring the company forward and halt all the greedy corporate bloodsuckers waiting in the wings. I sense they will make a formidable team, both in and out of the bedroom. But that is yet to be seen.

Character development was strong but I expect no less from Kendall Ryan. She writes great characters with spunk and tenacity and plenty of interesting flaws. But it’s the wonderful dialogue between our two mains and the simmering chemistry that is bubbling away under the surface that made this book the perfect read.

I’m totally hooked, and I cannot wait to continue this series.

Highly recommended for fans of sexy romantic comedy.

Thanks to the author and Inkslinger PR for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Blog Tour: His by Brenda Rothert

Today is my stop during the blog tour for His by Brenda Rothert. I really enjoyed this book and share my review with you today.

HIS_BrendaRothertTitle: His
Author: Brenda Rothert
Series: standalone
Rating: 4.5 stars
Genres: Contemporary Romance

I’d say I’m down on my luck, but that’s an understatement. I’m flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry and in hiding with my little sister at the age of twenty-one, I’ve never been so desperate. I’ve hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can’t refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There’s nothing I won’t do to keep her safe. I make the rules and I’m not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren’t so clear anymore.

She’s an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I’ve never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn’t meant to be controlled, so I’m forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I’ve finally met my match, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.

My Review:
A modern-day Pretty Woman that will leave you with all the feels. I adored this well-written, character-driven story that ended with a fantastic HEA.

I devoured His in one sitting, staying up until 4am to finish it. This is my second Brenda Rothert book (the other one was amazing too) and it most definitely won’t be my last. Boy, can this woman write a great yarn!

Andrew and Quinn were great characters, both dealing with the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Andrew lost his father in 9/11 and he has been solely focused and driven ever since. After managing to extricate himself from a more-recent nasty situation, he is hell-bent on avoiding relationships and only engaging in sexual one-nighters that he’s paid for. As you do. When fiesty Quinn enters his life he finds himself eating his words. Very quickly one night becomes a six-month contract and thus our story begins.

Quinn is running from a hidden past and doing everything in her power to keep herself and her younger sister Bethy away from the person chasing them. They have been barely surviving on the streets these last four years and when she crosses paths with Andrew it couldn’t come at a better time. She has literally reached rock-bottom.

I really enjoyed Quinn’s character, especially how she had matured as a result of her life experiences. She grew up protected and cared for and money was no object. Overnight, all that she had known was gone. Driven by a need to protect Bethy, she has forsaken all that she used to take for granted. When she is thrust into Andrew’s world, she is uncomfortable with the excess and the obscene wealth and, as a reader, we really get to see how much she has grown and developed. She didn’t want to sit around his house being pampered, so she went out and volunteered with the homeless. In the process, Andrew’s perspective on things began to change and his admiration and respect for Quinn accelerated.

I loved how patient Andrew was with Quinn, waiting until she was fully ready to consummate their relationship. The slow build of their romance was beautiful, not without its angsty moments, but it was credible and I believed in their chemistry.

Andrew became so protective of Quinn and it was so sweet. Ah swoon, he was perfect. And that epilogue? Amazing – loved it so much!

Most of the book focused on their relationship, with the other subplot only picking up in the last third of the book. I did think it was a little rushed and there was an opportunity to add more conflict and drama, but, to be fair, it didn’t dent my enjoyment of the book, as it really was a fantastic read.

I enjoy Brenda’s writing style, the book flowed at a consistent pace, and it was well edited.

I did find it a little bizarre that Dawson picked a homeless girl to bring to his boss. Surely, a man like Andrew would have gone to a discreet, high-class escort agency to get his hook-ups? I was also wary of Bean and it seemed out of character that Quinn would trust her sister with anyone, even if Bean had been their friend for two years.Anyway, I was able to overlook these issues and just enjoy it.

In summary, this was a great read and one I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Actual Rating 4.5 Stars

Remembering Everly Quote Graphic #2

Remembering Everly TP Release Day Blitz Excerpt

They had the ability to destroy lives, obliterate relationships and sabotage even the strongest partnerships. Big or small . . . it didn’t matter. Even the tiniest white lie had the power to corrode—to shatter and dismantle everything you loved.
I’d carried a secret so big, for so long that sometimes I felt physically weak from its weight. I had thought I could carry its burden to my grave—that eventually its truth would die along with me.
But secrets never die.
They live on far longer than we do, and they always find their way to the surface.
Mine certainly did.
Sitting alone in the apartment I shared with my fiancé, I gently rolled the smooth green stone between my thumb and forefinger, over and over, remembering the day it was returned to me.
In all our years together, I’d never seen August so cold. So lifeless.
It frightened me to my core.
But I still hadn’t told anyone. It had been three days and I had yet to tell my fiancé or best friend about the events that had taken place in that bridal shop. As far as Ryan and Sarah knew, August had rudely interrupted my bridal appointment to tell me he had his memories back—that was all.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Why hadn’t I elaborated? I didn’t want to admit my shame. I couldn’t share this secret, my darkest lie. What would they think of me? I was the reason August had been in that hospital bed for two years. And the worst part? I’d lied about it—to everyone.
Even those closest to me. Even August. I was the worst kind of human.
I knew Ryan would tell me the opposite. He would comfort me as I told him the truth, holding me as I shared my story about the awful truth from that night.
There was no mugger.
There was only me.

Author: Katie McGarry
Series: Pushing the Limits #5
Genres: Contemporary Romance

Tough and independent, 17-year-old Abby lets very few people into her inner circle. It’s common knowledge in her Kentucky town that she deals drugs, but not even her closest friends know why. But when a deal goes south and Abby’s suddenly in danger, she finds herself reluctantly forced to lean on daredevil Logan—a boy whose restless spirit matches her own.

Logan has his own reasons for wanting to keep Abby at arms’ length. But he never expected to find in her the one person who might help him face the demons he’s tried so hard to run from.

Together, Abby and Logan will have to make a decision: let their current circumstances weigh them down forever…or fight for the future they both thought was impossible.

People near the stage scream and clap and I’m about ready to throw my cell against the wall. Stupid, stupid boy and stupid me for stupidly somewhat liking him and him thinking he can get away with not answering me.
“Give it up for our boy Logan.”
My eyes rip up, go for the stage, and my mind shifts into reverse, fast-forward, rewind, and then that smile that’s associated with the devil slides across my face.
Logan stands strong on the stage. Guitar strapped across his chest. Baseball cap backwards on his black hair. And when he strikes the strings of the guitar, those biceps flex beautifully.
That chord just struck a lot deeper than anyone could have imagined. Past my bones, past my muscles, and it’s created a nice warmth that’s curling around my belly. Liquid warmth.
The logical part of my brain demands that I walk away, but he’s the one that scared me by not answering back. He’s the one that’s causing all these alien emotions stirring in my veins.
Yeah, I shouldn’t kiss Logan. I should definitely leave a boy like that alone. But he returned and he’s the one that climbed onto the stage and is looking addictively sexy with that guitar.
Yep, shouldn’t kiss him, but I already told Rachel, I’m going to kiss the guitarist tonight. Wouldn’t want that one to be a lie, now, would I?

Review: Never Never (Never Never #1) by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher

Never NeverTitle: Never Never
Author: Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher
Series: Never Never #1
Rating: 5 stars
Genres: Contemporary Fantasy Romance

Best friends since they could walk. In love since the age of fourteen.

Complete strangers since this morning.

He’ll do anything to remember. She’ll do anything to forget.

My Review:
I’ve been bingeing on Colleen Hoover books over the Christmas and I spotted this one and it instantly captured my attention. I’m always fascinated when authors collaborate, and I wonder if each author wrote a perspective each?

I love books that are told from male and female perspectives so I knew instantly that I’d love this. The writing is superb and clearly Tarryn is as talented as the wonderful Colleen.

This was completely mysterious, and I couldn’t figure out what was going on, which is exactly what I loved about it. Little pieces of Silas and Charlie’s lives are slowly revealed, enticing and ensnaring the reader. There was plenty of intrigue to keep me hooked. If you enjoy well-written fast-paced stories that revolve around friendship, love, betrayal with a healthy dose of the supernatural, then you’ll adore this series. Highly recommended.

Blog Tour: Stripped Bare by Emma Hart

Today is my stop during the blog tour for Stripped Bare by Emma Hart. I share my review of the book, an excerpt and some teasers!

Stripped bareTitle: Stripped Bare
Author: Emma Hart
Series: standalone
Rating: 5 stars
Genres: Contemporary Romance

What do you get when you mix a bachelorette party, the queen of dating disasters, and a stripper so hot he was forged from the fires of hell? Screwed. You get screwed….

Cocky. Commanding. Powerful. Relentless.
Those four words all summed up West Rykman perfectly.
So did filthy, dirty, sexy, and addictive.
He was supposed to be my one night stand…not my new marketing client.
He was definitely not supposed to be back inside my pants, not that anybody told him that.
I knew one thing: What West Rykman wanted, West Rykman got.
And he wanted me.

What happens in Vegas… might just make you stay.

My Review:
Emma Hart is definitely one of my fav authors and I’ve adored the books I’ve read so far in her Burke Brothers series. There was a sample of this book included in the back of one of those books and it hooked me instantly, so when the opportunity arose to review an advance copy of this book I didn’t need any convincing.

This little beauty suckered me in from the get-go and held my attention the entire way through. There is not a single thing I could fault or complain about. This book rocks. Snarky alpha-male? Check. Fiesty female lead who’s sworn off men? Check. Scorching-hot sizzling sex? Check. Incredible, pee-your-pants, roar-out-loud witty banter? Check check check!

Character development is PHENOMENAL in this book with each character beautifully created and progressed. I loved her virginal BF and his partner-in-crime Beck. But West and Mia stole the show. I could relate to how both of them were feeling and the emotions were very real and credible. There aren’t many surprises in the plot, but that’s ok because this is a real character-driven story. Emma really has a knack for writing fantastic characters.

The writing was superb, the pacing was perfect, and the setting was intriguing. Seriously, I loved every minute of this read. I need more. Like right now. Even though you can read this as a standalone, it is left on a bit of a cliffhanger in relation to Beck. Can’t wait to read his story.

Thank you, Emma, for a fab read. And thanks to Inkslinger PR for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

“You should have come and got me when that prick made you uncomfortable.”
I turned to face him. “Are you seriously telling me off?”
We paused as the traffic stopped, and he cut his gaze to me. “I couldn’t see you. I told you it wasn’t safe for you to go alone.”
I rolled my eyes. “He was only there for two minutes. I would have stabbed him with my stiletto before he could do anything.”
“And I believe you, but it doesn’t change the fact that he made you uncomfortable.”
We turned a corner.
“I don’t want anything to happen to you just because you’re determined to do market research.”
“Nothing happened to me.”
“Mia, it doesn’t change the fact that it couldn’t. He only left because I showed up. I watched the entire fucking thing.”
“And you only came in at the end? Gee, thanks, West. Knight in fucking shining armor right there, aren’t you?” I ran my fingers through my hair and looked away. The light curls were still in place, although they were more of a lazy wave, and I stared at my reflection in the side mirror. “We should probably not do this again.”
“On the contrary, I was having fun until the end. I don’t have fun much.”
“Looking out for me was fun? Yeah, okay.”
“I told you,” he said, pulling up outside my apartment block, which was really more of a converted three-story house. “I don’t want anything to happen to you. I’d feel bad.”
“Well, thanks. I’m gonna look over these notes in the morning and I’ll e-mail you. Okay?” I paused with my hand on the door and glanced back at him.
He was out of the fucking car.
Why was he out of the fucking car?
“Why are you out of the car?”
He smirked. Damn that smirk. “I’m taking you up.”
“Like hell you are.” I slammed the door and walked around the sleek Audi to stand right in front of him. I looked up at him and caught his gaze. “I can make it in and out of an elevator.”
“I’m sure you can. But I’m still taking you up.”
“No. You’re not!”
“All right, then.” He grabbed my waist and lifted me.
A shriek escaped between my lips as he swung me upward and over his shoulder. I scrambled to keep hold of my purse, but he ignored me as he carried me inside and pushed the elevator button.
“West! Put me down right now!”
He ignored me again and tightened his grip around my thighs when I tried to wriggle down. His strength was crazy. I was stuck there.
“Put me down! Now!”
He shook his head, this time acknowledging my words. But that was it. A fucking head shake.
“This is hardly professional!” I yelled, my voice echoing off walls of the metal box that was the elevator. I couldn’t believe he’d slung me over his shoulder like some kind of caveman.
Yo, Wilma, Betty? Fred and Barney escaped. I found one of them.
“West Rykman, I swear to a god I don’t believe in that, if you don’t put me down right this goddamn second, I’m going to tear your balls off with my bare hands and shove them up your ass!”
The elevators doors opened, and he took the few steps toward my door before finally, slowly, lowering me back down to the ground.
“Ugh!” As soon as my feet hit the floor, I stepped back and glared at him. “How dare you manhandle me?”
He fixed his bright, Caribbean-blue eyes on mine and curved his lips. “I told you I was taking you upstairs. I didn’t tell you I was walking you up.”
“You’re an animal.”
“You weren’t coming up alone. I was raised a gentleman.”
That made me stop rummaging for my keys and raise my eyebrows in disbelief. “You take off your clothes for a living, and the first time we met, you flexed your cock against my face.”
He grabbed my waist for a second time tonight and spun me against my door. I dropped my purse in my shock, but I couldn’t reach for it because he’d cupped my chin and forced me to look at him.
“And the second time we met,” he said in a low voice, “you flexed my cock against the back of your throat. What point are you trying to make, angel?”
“That you’re no more a gentleman than I am a lady,” I shot back. “Now, let me go so I can go inside and consider how we continue this professional relationship.”
West searched my eyes for a long moment before dropping his hand. He took half a step back, and I went to reach for my purse, but he changed his mind.
He smoothly spun back to me, and no sooner had I met the flash of his blue eyes than he had his mouth on mine. I let out a quiet moan when he swept his tongue across the seam of my lips and wrapped one arm around my waist. He pulled our bodies together, my shoulders pressing into the door, and kissed me deeply.
My head swam. I couldn’t make head or tails of this, and although it was wrong, so wrong, I couldn’t stop.
The kiss was hot—oh god, so hot—and my whole body felt like it was on fire as I wound my fingers in the collar of his shirt and held him closer to me. His fingers twitched against my back as one of his hands slid down and cupped my ass. He squeezed, pulling my hips to his. His erection was obvious, pushing into me, and I whimpered into his mouth.
God, I wanted him.
He pulled away from me as abruptly as he’d kissed me, but he didn’t move. His mouth eased its way across my jaw to my ear, and his hot breath skittered across my skin when he paused there.
“I might call you angel, but I have a feeling you’re going to be my own personal sin, Mia O’Halloran.”
He kissed the tender spot just beneath my ear, making me shiver, and released me. I struggled to control my breathing as I watched him walk away toward the stairwell. He paused at the top, and I sank my teeth into my bottom lip.
He turned.
Dropped his gaze to my mouth.
Met my eyes.
I sank back against my door. I could still feel his touch. His taste lingered on my lips, and although it wasn’t anything incredibly specific, he was there, teasing me without being near me. I brushed hair from my face, picked my purse up, and dug for my key. I found it and let myself into the dark apartment.
I locked the door behind me and walked to my bed. I’d barely undressed and retrieved my phone with its alarm before I buried myself beneath the sheets.

Review: Filthy Beautiful Lies (Filthy Beautiful Lies #1) by Kendall Ryan

Title: Filthy Beautiful Lies
Author: Kendall Ryan
Series: Filthy Beautiful Lies #1
Rating: 5 stars
Genres: Contemporary Romance

**Warning: this book contains an addictively filthy alpha male who will dampen your panties and own your days and nights. Proceed at your own risk.**

Meet Colton Drake…

I have no idea why she auctioned off her virginity for a cool mill. Regardless, I’m now the proud new owner of a perfectly intact hymen. A lot of good that will do me. I have certain tastes, certain sexual proclivities. My cock is a bit more discriminatory than most. And training a virgin takes finesse and patience – both of which I lack.

Sophie Evans has been backed into a corner. With her sister’s life hanging in the balance, the only choice is to claw her way out, even if that means selling her virginity to the highest bidder at an exclusive erotic club. When Colton Drake takes her home, she quickly learns nothing is as it seems with this beautifully troubled man. Being with him poses challenges she never expected, and pushes her to want things she never anticipated.

A sinfully seductive erotic romance where everything has a price and the cost of love is the highest of all from New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Kendall Ryan.

My Review:
Loved it. Wasn’t expecting a slow burning love affair but that’s what it was. Beautifully written. Adore Sophie and Colton. One-clicked immediately because that ending – holy cow, need to know what happens next. Absolutely superb. Best KR book I’ve read so far.

Mysterious and cool, challenging and just a little bit dangerous, Ian somehow makes her feel safe—even as he digs into the deepest secrets of her life and pushes her to the breaking point.

As raw ecstasy gives way to agonized truths, their dark obsession exposes secrets that have been buried for far too long. Ian wants to tear down her walls and heal the sensual woman underneath. But if Veronica’s learned anything, it’s that the line between pleasure and pain is a narrow one—and when caught between them the only thing that matters is how you play the game.

My Review:
A sexy, seductive, enthralling read that was a really gripping page-turner.

I was intrigued by the blurb and looking forward to getting stuck into an old-Hollywood royalty read. It didn’t disappoint.

Ian is a highly-successful author whose latest blockbuster has just been adapted for the big screen. Enter the gorgeous and highly acclaimed Veronica Romero, to play the aptly-named Belladonna. Ian has secured a gig writing a high-profile piece about Veronica in the run up to the movie release, but he is there on false pretense. He is writing a new book and he’s discovered that Veronica has a hidden past linked to a horrific serial killer, and he’s determined to dig deeper. Until he meets Veronica and they fall for one another.

Both of them are vulnerable and hiding aspects of their true natures to avoid opening up the past. Lovegame takes us on a journey of discovery as they learn to push past their vulnerability and let one another in. But, oh, the path to true love never runs smoothly, and there was plenty of back and forth witty banter and one-upmanship.

When they give into their lust for one another, it quickly became quite depraved. That was probably the only aspect of the story I didn’t like. While they did have explosive chemistry, it was very clear that Veronica had psychological issues tied up with sex. She isn’t adverse to playing up her sex-symbol status, or using it where the situation demands it, but it isn’t who she is behind the actress persona. She actually has some series issues, as a result of the horrific trauma she suffered in the past, and it was obvious they were unresolved. Therefore, I found it difficult to accept her sexual transformation with Ian, when they had only just met and they hopped into bed quite quickly and especially given everything he did to her.

Veronica fears she is losing her mind when certain inexplicable situations arise. She becomes confused and unsure who she should trust. I enjoyed this part of the story, even if it was fairly easy to predict the culprit. It was still very well-written.

I loved the call that Ian made toward the end of this book, and he was prepared to put his love for her above everything else. I was so rooting for them.

I also really enjoyed the epilog.

The pacing was consistent, the writing accomplished and the world-building stylish and effortlessly described. I always enjoy dual POV and Lovegame was no exception.

In summary, this was a fantastic read which will appeal to fans of well-written erotic romance.

I take picture after picture, with a vintage champagne glass in my hand or my face buried in a huge bouquet of dahlias. Toward the end, Marc has the stylist and his assistant wrap me up in a long string of artificial belladonna since the real stuff can cause problems if it touches the skin. Then they heap my gloved hands with a mountain of the poisonous black berries and Marc has me hold my hands out to the camera in a deadly macabre offering.
Again and again Marc shoots me like that, taking pictures from every possible angle. On his knees in front of me, looking up. From a ladder above me, looking down. Beside me. Behind me. Across the room. Up close. Again and again he points and clicks. Again and again, I smile and pout and make every other expression he asks for. I even take his suggestion to tilt my head back with my mouth open wide and hold one of the berries between my thumb and index finger as I pretend to be about to drop it in. As I do, I close my eyes and pretend not to be totally icked out.
When I open them two minutes and twenty shots later, the first person I see is Ian. He’s leaning back against one of the mirrored walls and for once his omnipresent notebook is nowhere to be seen. Instead he’s staring straight at me, a half-snarl on his normally calm face and his eyes burning with a mixture of contempt and desire.
It’s the first time I’ve seen anything but pleasant or puzzled interest from him and it has the tiny hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Has ice skating down my spine and a desert taking up residence in my mouth. Because, in that moment, as our eyes lock and his turn impossibly darker, impossibly blacker, I don’t know who he sees. Can’t tell who he wants.
Me or her?
Actress or murderer?
Sentient being or a character he helped create?
It’s just more fuel to add to the fire of my earlier doubts and in that one tense and electric moment, it comes to me. What the cover shot should be.
What I need it to be.
Marc backs off a little, has his assistant come forward with a trash bag for me to throw away the last of the berries and the gloves I’ve been wearing. As she pauses to tie up the bag in front of me, I ask her for a couple wipes.
She quickly returns with a box of baby wipes and I smile my thanks even as Marc instructs me back against the mirror for what he calls “the last series of shots.”
I do as he instructs, but as he’s fiddling with the lighting, I turn toward the mirror and swipe the wipe over the right half of my face.
“What are you doing?” my makeup artist squawks as he comes racing across the room at me.
“Trust me, Dalton,” I tell him as I continue to scrub.
“Stop doing that!” he orders as he grabs on to the end of the wipe and actually tries to wrestle it away from me.
“Just wait,” I instruct, refusing to let go no matter how hard he tugs.
“What are you up to, Veronica?” Marc asks. He sounds more intrigued than annoyed.
“I’ll show you,” I tell him, pushing gently at Dalton’s hand until he finally lets go with a whimper.
And then, with the whole room—including Ian—watching me intently, I wipe the entire half side of my face clean of any and all makeup. I do it carefully, making sure that the line that runs down the center of my face is exact so that both sides are completely symmetrical.
When I’m done, I reach up and take off my right earring and hand it to Dalton who still looks slightly shell-shocked. Then I step back and stare at this new reflection of myself in the mirror.
Half me at my most natural, half her at her most armored, it’s a devastating look. Made even more so by the elaborate fifties makeup Dalton has me in—all red lips and thick black liner and long, long lashes.
There is a difference, I tell myself fiercely as I study myself. I am not her. I will never be her, no matter what it felt like four months ago.
In the background I’m aware of Marc cursing softly, of him snapping picture after picture. I don’t turn around, instead continuing to give him my back so that he gets both me and my reflection in each shot.
“Turn around,” he breathes after he’s taken at least three dozen pictures.
Reluctantly, I do as he requests, then follow his impatient gesture for me to move away from the mirror. I step forward and then the camera starts again, clicking away to get the shot from this angle as well.
At that moment, Ian moves and I make the mistake of glancing his way. Our gazes lock and heat slams through me at the look he’s giving me, has my eyes widening and my lips parting on a gasp as I struggle to draw air into lungs that have abruptly forgotten how to work.
“Fuck,” Marc breathes from where he’s narrowing in on my face. “That’s it. That’s the money shot.”
I drag my eyes away from Ian, but it’s too late. For the first time in a very, very long time, I feel vulnerable. And I hate every second of it.
