Dani’s survived a lot of sh*t storms.

Her mother died. Her two sisters loathed her. One aunt hated her. The other was strangely distant, but the worst storm—being dumped by her childhood best friend/high school boyfriend/first love for her younger sister.

There went the one person who was hers and with that, the main reason she stuck around. So, she left for ten years. But now she’s back, and nothing’s the same.

With help from Jonah Bannon, a reformed—kind of—bad boy she remembers from high school, Dani uncovers family secrets that have spanned generations. And along with those, she’s about to face the biggest sh*t storm of her life.

Only this time, she may not survive.

Excerpt:
“Why’d you push me earlier?”
“It’s not important.”
But it was. She felt it in her chest. It was so important, and she needed him to say it again. She was salivating for the chance. She wanted to reassure him, and this time she felt it in her heart. She knew she wasn’t going anywhere. She wanted him to see it in her eyes, that she meant every single word.
She whispered now, “Ask me. Ask me again.”
His eyes met hers, narrowing slightly. He was looking into her, reading her.
She was letting him. There was no wall, no hesitation this time. She wanted him to know her, not just her body. All of her. A second passed. He was still searching in her. Another second. More. He waited a full thirty before asking, his voice so soft and tender, “What would you do if you found out another person cared about you? If you mattered to one more person?”
“Nothing.” She was trying to convey her feelings through her eyes. She wanted him to know so badly. “I wouldn’t run. I wouldn’t walk. I wouldn’t hide. I’d do nothing except stand and embrace it.”
His eyes darkened, an emotion passed in them, one that had her heart beating so fast again. “Yeah?” He let go of her hand, but touched the side of her face. He held her in the palm of his hand, and his thumb rubbed over her cheek. It was like he was smoothing away any lingering worries she might have. “What if I was that person?”
She leaned toward him, her eyes going from his lips back to his gaze. Both were pulling her in, making her yearn for more. “Then I’d say, I feel the same.” Her breath held in her throat. They were talking in code, but it was out now. She was telling him how she felt, and a second later, his lips were on hers.
This. She turned, wound her arms around his neck. This was everything.

From the # 1 New York Times and International bestselling author comes a richly moving story about heartbreak and guilt, second chances and hope. Full of familiar, fan-favorite characters and no two people more deserving of a happy ending, Fire In You will burn bright beyond the last page…

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.

She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.

Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

My Review:
A feel-good second-chances love story full of hope and heart.

This is the last book in Jennifer’s Wait for You series so I was feeling quite nostalgic reading it. Even though I prefer her YA and NA paranormal books to her other work, I have really enjoyed this series and come to love all the couples – they are like long-lost friends at this stage.

One of the aspects I adored about this book was how much the other couples featured, especially Cam and Avery who are my all time fav couple. But we also got to see everyone else and they are all happily married and with kids or with kids on the way. It gave me tons of warm and cozy feelings to see everyone in such a good place.

I warmed to Jillian pretty much straight away – she has been through so much but she’s a fighter and she’s determined to reclaim the life she always wanted despite the tragedy and trauma of her past. Finally facing up to her legacy, she returns to the Lima Academy only to discover that Brock is back on the scene and there’s no escaping him. He has been the love of her life since she was nine but he has hurt her in the past and she has deliberately kept her distance from him since the fateful night that tore them apart.

Brock has always had a soft spot for Jilly although he acknowledges that he has failed her and let her down. Now, he wants a chance to make that up to her and to prove to her that they truly belong together.

This was quite a slow-burning build up to their relationship but it was really sweet and full of humor and warmth and love. I adored it.

I did feel like it lacked a little depth in terms of plot and that’s the only reason why this is a four-star rather than five-star review, however, I still think it was a great read and a very fitting end to a fantastic series.

When I pick up a JLA book, I always know I’m in for a good time and this reading experience was no different.

Highly Recommended.

INTERVIEW WITH JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

My YA NA Book Obsession
Author Siobhan Davis’s Blog

Let me open by saying how honored I am to interview my favorite author for my blog. I am a MASSIVE fan of Jennifer’s work having read everything she has written, and I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve reread the Covenant and Lux series. Thank you, Jennifer, for the hours of sheer entertainment value you have given me (and for Aiden St. Delphi – definitely, thanks for him!!)

INTERVIEW
1. You are a hugely prolific writer, and I know that requires strong discipline—so, I’m curious to know what your writing process/structure is like?
I don’t have a strict writing process or structure, but I don’t usually outline before I begin writing a book. I’ll just come up with an idea and the main characters, then I start writing the first chapter. I write every day and I’m usually watching TV for the background noise while I’m writing.

2. You have inspired my own writing, and I was wondering which authors have inspired you?
Richie Cusick

3. Fire in You is the last book in the amazing Wait for You series. I loved it, but it was bittersweet when I reached the end knowing that I’m waving goodbye to some of my favorite characters. How do you feel when you reach the end of a series?
I think bittersweet describes my feelings when I reach the end of a series, too. I loved writing the Wait for You series and all of the couples, but I’m also excited to start writing something new.

4. You write the most swoon-worthy book boyfriends, and I love so many of them, but Aiden has a very special place in my heart. Which one of your male characters holds a special place in your heart and why?
I think that all of my male characters hold a special place in my heart for different reasons. It’s a tough choice. In the Wait for You series, I’d probably pick Jase.

5. What do you like to do in your downtime? (Writers around the world screaming “downtime? What the heck is that!”)
It’s true that I don’t have a lot of time outside of writing and events, but I love to garden when I have the opportunity. I’ll also take some time to decorate for the holidays because I love having my house decorated early for Christmas.

6. Have you ever been to Ireland or do you have any plans to come here?
I haven’t been to Ireland, but I would love to visit at some point!

7. What can we expect to see on the shelves from you in 2017?
Till Death – February 28, 2017
The Struggle – March 28, 2017
The Dead List (Spring 2017)
Brave (Summer 2017)
If There’s No Tomorrow (Fall 2017)

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me. I can’t wait to read your new stuff and I’m hoping we get to see Daemon, Katy, and the rest of the Lux cast on the big screen soon!

Baseball player Kyle Sawyer has many labels: bad boy, delinquent, ladies’ man, fearless outfielder… Only one of them is actually true. But then sweet ballet dancer Faith Gladwell asks him to help wreck her reputation, and everything goes sideways.

Faith knows a thing or two about love, and what she had with her cheating jerk of an ex wasn’t it. When he starts spreading rumors about her being an Ice Queen, Faith decides it’s time to let a little bad into her life.

Lucky for her, Kyle Sawyer–dark, dangerous, totally swoonworthy Kyle Sawyer–is landscaping her backyard over Spring Break. Shirtless. And if she can convince him to play along, ” dating” Kyle will silence the rumors.

But Faith’s plan threatens to expose Sawyer’s biggest secret of all…and that’s a risk he’s not willing to take.

My Review:
This sweet, adorable romance ticked all the boxes for me. It was a quick, entertaining read that left me with so many good feels. I’ll definitely be checking out more of this author’s work in future.

Faith has been trying to work up the courage to finish with her bf of six months, Cameron, but she’s a nice girl and she doesn’t want to hurt his feelings. When the cat is out of the bag, Cameron shows no such concern for her when he runs off with another girl straightaway and then starts spreading malicious rumors about her around school.

Faith needs to put a stop to it and the solution magically appears in her backyard. Kyle has lived behind his manufactured rep for years and the strain of keeping up a facade is really getting to him. When Faith enters his world, for the very first time he’s forced to confront the reality of his situation and he doesn’t like the corner he’s boxed himself into.

As he grows closer to Faith, he begins to question everything about himself and the path he has chosen. Faith starts to fall for the sweet boy who is nothing like she expected. She quickly realizes something is amiss but it takes a bit of toing and froing before Kyle can summon up the courage to tell her who he really is.

Gosh, I just loved this story in its entirety! Not only is it an entertaining well-written story with great characters and the appropriate amount of emotional depth but it is packed full of so many positive messages for teens. I loved how the author explored teen identity vs societal perception and how powerful the message was about being true to yourself. I also really adored Kyle’s personality and how thoughtful he was when it came to winning Faith’s heart. He was so respectful of her and he took the time to get to know her and find out the things she liked and took a real genuine interest in same. Not because he wanted to get her into bed but because he truly liked her and wanted to understand and support her. It was a different take on the hot bad-boy type and I really found that refreshing.

The writing is great and the pacing is perfect. I genuinely can’t find any fault with this book. I loved it so much I’m planning on purchasing a paperback copy for my 16-year-old son because I think it will be a great read for him.

Thanks to Entangled Teen for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Review: The Goal (Off-Campus #4) by Elle Kennedy

the-goalTitle: The Goal
Author: Elle Kennedy
Series: Off-Campus #4
Rating: 3.75 stars
Genres: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Blurb:
She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

My Review:
The Goal is a fitting end to what’s been an enthralling, panty-melting, sizzling rollercoaster ride of a series.

John Tucker has been the quietest of the Briar boys. Before reading this book, the impression I had of him was that of a gentle giant and somewhat of a momma’s boy. And he is all that – but so much more. Without a doubt, Tuck was the star of this show. You can’t help but fall for his old worldly charm and good manners, mixed with his devilish, naughty side.

I was wary of Sabrina going into this book, and she is one complex lady. No one has really ever loved her so she doesn’t know how to love or be loved. She has this iron-clad wall up, which isn’t easily shattered, but Tuck is oh-so-patient with her, and it only endeared me to him more.

I was warming up to Sabrina when the baby bombshell hit, and I began to hate her for how she treated Tucker. She consistently pushed him away and I intensely disliked how she decided how he was feeling without even asking him for his opinion. Yes, it was her body, and ultimately her choice, but she gave him no part of the decision-making process and that boiled my blood. I wished they had just sat down and talked it through but she was so used to fending for herself that she shut him out and he was too afraid that she’d put her walls back up. I did think he could’ve been a bit firmer with her – it was his baby too.

I also felt like a lot of the pregnancy and their relationship was rushed or glossed over and big chunks swept past without much mention. It disrupted the flow a little for me.

I loved all the glimpses we got into the other couples, and I loved how Sabrina and Dean interacted. The writing was superb as usual, and it was an enjoyable read, but it definitely had a different vibe than the first three books. To be fair, we were dealing with unplanned pregnancy so it was a serious subject matter, but it lacked some of the humor of the preceding books.

Overall, though, it was a great read, just not my fav in the series.

I get a sense there might be a spin-off as there was a hint to a Summer-Fitz potential relationship toward the end. Oh please, let it be true! I am so not ready to say goodbye to these boys or this world. It truly is an incredible series, and if you haven’t read it yet you need your head examined.

Over and out.

Actual rating: 3.75 stars.

Two fractured hearts and a forbidden love they can’t deny.

You shouldn’t want what you can’t have…

Faye Donovan has lost everything. After her parent’s tragic death, she’s whisked away from her home in Ireland when an unknown uncle surfaces as her new guardian.

Dropped smack-dab into the All-American dream, Faye should feel grateful. Except living with her wealthy uncle, his fashion-empire-owning wife, and their seven screwed-up sons is quickly turning into a nightmare—especially when certain inappropriate feelings arise.

Kyler Kennedy makes her head hurt and her heart race, but he’s her cousin.

He’s off limits.

And he’s not exactly welcoming—Kyler is ignorant, moody, and downright cruel at times—but Faye sees behind the mask he wears, recognizing a kindred spirit.

Kyler has sworn off girls, yet Faye gets under his skin. The more he pushes her away, the more he’s drawn to her, but acting on those feelings risks a crap-ton of prejudice, and any whiff of scandal could damage the precious Kennedy brand.

Concealing their feelings seems like the only choice.

But when everyone has something to hide, a secret is a very dangerous thing.

Excerpt

Their obscene wealth intimidates me.
Not the people.
The money.
The driver opens my uncle’s door first before attending to mine. James doesn’t make any move to exit. He looks contemplative. “I hope you’ll be happy here, Faye. Truly, I do.”
“Thank you. Me, too.” I hop out of the car as the driver retrieves my suitcase from the boot.
A splash of color in the corner of the garage captures my attention. Three racing motorbikes rest on an elevated platform. One is orange and blue and there is a multitude of brand logos on the side. The other two bikes are no less impressive. One is painted in a dark shade of green, the other bright yellow. A myriad of similar stickers decorates the side panels. I’m inexplicably drawn to them, and my feet move of their own accord.
Reaching out, I run the tip of my finger along the bodywork and up and down the wheels, my fingers dipping into the grooves in the tires. I can almost feel the enhanced adrenaline in the air. Motorbikes have always excited me, and the pure rush I’m getting is sending tingles of anticipation ricocheting all over my body.
I’m so entranced that I barely register the sound of approaching footsteps.
“Get your hands off my bike.” The deep male cadence verges on a predatory growl. The possessive quality to his voice isn’t lost on me either.
Giant goose bumps sprout on my arms, but I smother my fear and lift my head up in a confident manner. A red flush creeps up my chest and over my neck as a devastatingly good-looking boy reaches my side.
I’m tall—for a girl—and I’m usually pretty much on the level with most guys, but the top of my head barely reaches this dude’s chin, so he’s got to be at least six-two to my five-nine.
His body exudes warmth like a weapon. It crashes into me, almost knocking me off my feet. Slowly, my eyes travel up his body, taking in every ripped, lean, taut inch of him. He’s wearing dark navy jeans and a plain white shirt that’s molded to his perfectly chiseled abs like it’s painted on. I gulp.
They sure don’t grow them like this in Ireland.
My eyes continue their journey, up beyond the inviting, exposed strip of skin at the top of his shirt, and note voluptuous lips that are pinched tight, the light layer of dark stubble on his sculpted chin and cheeks, and the tan, smooth lines of his handsome face. I brace myself, rocking back on my heels, as I stare into stunning pale blue eyes. Framed by a thick layer of inky-black lashes most girls would kill for, his eyes are vast pools that I could easily drown in.
This guy is seriously good-looking, and he knows it, too. Crossing his arms over his chest, he pins me with a venomous look, and I shrink back from the dangerous vibes he’s emitting.
“Are you done drooling yet?”

All warfare is deception. Even in high school.

It’s been nineteen days since Isis Blake forgot about him. The boy she can’t quite remember. She’s stuck in the hospital with a turban-size bandage on her head, more Jell-o than a human being should ever face, and a tiny bit of localized amnesia. Her only goal? To get out of this place before she becomes a complete nutjob herself.

But as Isis’s memories start to return, she realizes there’s something important there at the edges of her mind. Something that may mean the difference between life and death. Something about Sophia, Jack’s girlfriend.

Jack Hunter—the “Ice Prince”—remembers everything. Remembers Isis’s purple hair and her smart-ass mouth. Remembers that for a little while, Isis made him feel human. She made him feel. She burned a hole in the ice…and it’s time to freeze back up. Boys like him don’t deserve girls like her. Because Jack is dangerous. And that danger might be the only thing protecting her from something far more threatening.

Her past.

My Review:
Another superb read from the phenomenally talented Sara Wolf. This series packs plenty of punch. What I love most about it is the complex characterization, witty dialogue, and angst-filled romance that had me biting my nails to the bone!

My heart bled for Isis and Jack in this one. Just as they seemed to have come to an understanding, Isis can’t remember who Jack is and he feels like it’s his fault for the way he’s treated her. I spent the whole book praying that her memories of him would return so that all would be right with the world.

Sophia plays more of a central part in this story, and the mystery that was introduced in the first book is revealed here. There were elements of the plot that I had already guessed, which was a bit of a bummer, but there was enough going on with other sub-plots that were left-of-field to compensate for same.

Does it make me a nasty person that I thought of making a voodoo doll of Sophia and sticking her with pins until she just evaporated? Because she was seriously getting on my wick in this book. Yes, I know I’m coming across as very insensitive but she was standing in the way of true love, and I will always champion true love.

Like the last book, I did predict the ending, but it was still a shocker. I’m known for loving my cliffhangers and my teen angst so this book was a pretty perfect read.

I hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next one as I’m already on tenterhooks waiting to find out what happens next. I have a feeling Jack is going to blame himself and push Isis away and I think I might be throwing a few temper tantrums before this series concludes.

Overall, this was another fab read and I highly recommend it to fans of witty, edgy, slightly dark, YA contemporary romance.

Thanks to Entangled Teen for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Don’t love your enemy. Declare war on him.

Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to Buttcrack-of-Nowhere, Ohio, to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing—Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.

I’m a doctor. Mobster. Killer.
My hands are covered in filth. I don’t have the right to touch anything as clean and pure as Ellison MacAllister.

I distance myself … always remaining obscure, composed, restrained.
Careful to never allow my eyes to linger too long.
Careful to hide my interest.
Careful to keep my burning desire buried beneath the surface.

I do it for her—suffer in silence—because it’s what is best for the woman I love.
And she has no idea.

She’ll be initiated as a Fellowship member soon. One of my mafia brothers will go through endurance so he’ll earn the right to claim her.
Make her his wife.
Kill. Me. Slowly.

I’m running out of time. Only a month remains before she’s beyond my reach forever.
I want to taste her. Share sleepless nights. Ride out her storm.
I want to give her the kind of nights she will still feel between her legs the next morning.
I want us to share the kind of passion that forms on our skin and drips down to saturate the sheets.
Between the sweat and the moans and the messy hair, I want her to know how hard she’s been loved.

To have her is to taint her.
I should stay away. But I won’t. I can’t.
I’m a selfish bastard.
A selfish bastard in love.

My Review:
This is my first book by Georgia Cates but, by golly, it won’t be the last.

I adored this book from the first deliciously-crafted word to the last. Although I haven’t read the Sin Trilogy, I had no issue in picking up and understanding the plot, the world, or the characters and damn was that refreshing. A lot of times authors cite books as standalone that are building on characters introduced in other books or series and they turn out to be anything but standalone. I cite Endurance as a perfect example of how to write a spin-off book/series and not skimp on the character development. I didn’t feel like I missed out on a thing by not having read the other series first and I applaud the author for the perfect execution of this story.

Jamie is the Fellowship’s doctor so he largely avoids any front line action. It’s an honorable role to everyone but his despicable mother and I understand his deceased father was unhappy with his life choice, too, having favored him for a leadership role. Jamie suffers under the weight of their disappointment/disapproval and subsequently doesn’t feel like he is worthy of Ellison.

Ellison is crushing on Jamie big style but growing increasingly frustrated with his apparent lack of interest. When it becomes obvious that he’s as into her as she is into him, she is exasperated at his unwillingness to step up and claim her. Jamie thinks he’s doing the right thing because he believes one of his brothers can protect her better, even though the thought of anyone else claiming her is killing him. Ellison thinks he’s being downright pig-headed and sets out to change his mind.

I loved both main characters and could relate to their perspectives. They were perfect together! A fantastic team – both personally and professionally. I really wanted to knock some sense into Jamie but I had faith that Ellison could pull it off successfully. Their chemistry was scorching hot and I was so rooting for this couple.

I loved Georgia’s writing style and the pace was perfect – it was never overly described and there was no filler and no tendency to skim. It clipped along at a nice steady pace.

The plot was a little on the flimsy side at times but that didn’t matter as the relationship was the main focus point and that was pure perfection on a page.

I enjoyed the world building and I’m definitely intrigued to know more. I also enjoyed the secondary characters.

All in all, this was a really great read and I look forward to reading more in this world in the future.

EXCERPT 2
Chapter 2: Ellison’s POV

“I’m not as strong as you.” I don’t have an ounce of willpower when it comes to this beautiful man. Even now, I want to plead with him to have me. To claim me. To take me into the bedroom and make me scream his name over and over.
“I’m not as strong as you think.”
“You were strong enough to tell me no.” I ache in my chest as I recall him pushing me away. No man has ever hurt my heart the way Jamie did that day.
“You’re wrong. I’m so damn weak when it comes to you, Ellison.”
We’d be together if that were so. “We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.”
“The Order takeover is scheduled to happen in three weeks. You’re going to belong to another soon after. And it’s making me lose my fucking mind.”
Is it wrong to be happy to hear him admit he’s going crazy? “You made your decision.”
“What if I don’t want to live the rest of my life not knowing how you look when you wake next to me in the mornings, or how you feel in my arms at night when we fall asleep, or how you smile in your sleep when you’re dreaming of happy things?”
He didn’t mention a word about claiming or marrying me. That means I fall into the third category of females in his precious Fellowship. Fuck-worthy. “You said you wouldn’t taint me.”
“You won’t be considered tainted in the eyes of the brothers if they don’t know we’ve been together. It would have to be our secret.”
We’d be hush-hush, keeping everything we share in the dark . . . like it’s dirty. Like it’s wrong. Like it’s depraved.
So, what? When we’re over, I have to watch him hop from one Fellowship whore to the next because he can never have a wife? I have to pick up my broken heart and simply move on with my husband? I don’t work like that. It’s not in my makeup.
“I deserve better.”
“You deserve the best.” My chest tightens when Jamie repeats the words my father spent years instilling in me.
“You think sneaking around with you behind the backs of the brothers is what I deserve?” I want Jamie but not that way.
“It’s all I’m able to give you right now.”
“But I want more.”
I want his body, but more than that I want his love. I want his forever. My feelings are stronger than ever so what happens when our time together ends and I can’t give him up?
A month with the man I love versus never knowing what it feels like to have him inside me. Never knowing what it feels like to wake with him beside me. Never knowing what it feels like to have him hold me while I fall asleep. It should be a no-brainer . . . except I know me. I’ll fall so deeply in love with him that letting go will wreck me.

Rating: 4 stars

After tragedy strikes New Jersey University’s Sheridan Hall, freshman quarterback Ben Riley’s stable, normal life is turned upside down. Sidelined from playing the game he loves and on the verge of losing his scholarship, Ben wants nothing more than to escape the chaos of college and return home to rural Pennsylvania and his family.

Yet, there’s something that keeps him from running. Or someone. A cute blonde he had a chance with but blew off for all the wrong reasons.

Megan Smith has secrets. Secrets that have burned her in the past. Secrets she’s unwilling to share with anyone at Sheridan Hall—especially Ben, her sexy, rough-around-the-edges floormate who broke her heart in a matter of days after moving into Sheridan. Meg decided early on that it’s easier to live life on her own than to share her secrets and let people in.

Meg runs, and Ben follows. But sooner or later, the clock on their chance at love will expire. With inner demons dragging them both down, they must find a way to stop running and trust one another or risk losing their perfectly matched love forever.

My Review:
Charming, romantic and full of heart, She Runs Away is a great second installment in the captivating Sheridan Hall series by Jessica Calla.

We were first introduced to Ben (and indeed Megan) in She Laughs in Pink. Something very traumatic happened in Sheridan Hall at the end of that book and as we start into this one it is clear that everyone is struggling to cope in the aftermath of the tragedy. Ben was injured and that injury now threatens his future football career. But it’s more than that. He is actually suffering from PTSD and running away from his problems instead of tackling them head-on.

Megan has a habit of doing the same, but it’s more of a defensive mechanism for her. While she grew up in a loving environment, it was less than traditional and her self-esteem suffers as a result. Ben blew her off back in September and she still feels the shadow of Juliet hovering in the wings, so she’s reluctant to start anything with him again.

But they have a really strong attraction to one another and soon they are agreeing to a sex contract in a feeble attempt to protect their hearts.

I adored Ben in this book, more so than the first one (even with that beard – not a beard lover!) He was such a nice guy and he genuinely cared for Megan but she has so many barriers up that it was difficult for him to break through. Megan grated on my nerves a little, even if I was sympathetic. Her actions in relation to that “person” who showed up irritated me no end. How she could doubt her father was beyond me. For an intelligent girl, she acted like a right idiot at times.

There was no doubt in my mind that Ben would grow tired of trying so hard, and he did, but Megan stepped up to the plate in spectacular fashion and I loved the end of the book. It gave me such a warm and cozy feeling, aww!!

The main reason I’ve rated this book four-star rather than five-star rating is because I felt it dragged a lot in the middle and my mind started wandering. The sub-plot involving that mystery person that showed up (being vague to avoid spoilers) lacked depth and I never felt any real tension or conflict as a result. I think this could’ve been fleshed out to add more to the story.

The writing was superb, as I’ve come to expect from Jessica, and all the characters are well-developed. I enjoyed the setting especially the sojourn to Miami! I love how much care and attention Jessica pays to her secondary characters and it was great to see Juliet and Chase again and to get to know Maggie (I’m guessing the next book is about her and Dave.)

While I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the first book, it was still an excellent read and I’m very much invested in this series. Can’t wait to read book three!

My Review:
An entertaining read with well-developed characters, a wonderful creative setting, some real-life problems, and a sweet romance I could totally get behind.

I haven’t read any of the other books in this series (including the first book which tells how Sloane and Tru got together) but it didn’t matter as this can be read as a standalone.

I love that both mains were creative people – Sloane is the mystery talent behind Graphic Grrl, a very successful online animated superhero strip, and Tru is a wannabe filmmaker who loves nothing more than filming his beautiful girlfriend – and it really created a great backdrop for the story.

Tru and Sloane are great characters, both complex and well developed and a good representation of teenagers struggling to deal with family and identity issues. Together, they were a wonderful team and a great example of a truly supportive relationship. I could understand that Tru didn’t want Sloane to become his crutch, and he wanted to be the type of boy she deserved, but I hated that he mistakenly pushed her away. Sloane wants to do the right thing by him so she goes along with it even if she is missing him terribly.

The situation with Finn was very humorous at times and I’m intrigued to read his and Willa’s story now.

I love that family features quite prominently in this book, even if it is more of the dysfunctional variety. I adored Dylan and only wish we had gotten to see more of him. Jenna was also a great character.

The romance was sweet and clean and my only complaint is that I wish there had been more of it and that it was a little more emotionally intense.

The plot wasn’t anything amazingly original but it’s well executed and it chips along at a nice pace. The book does deal with some serious issues but it’s not a deep read, however, I liked that therapy was involved and how that played out as that’s an important message (even if the transition would have taken longer in real life.)

Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and I look forward to checking out other books in this series.
