When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin-one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this USA Today and #2 New York Times bestselling first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down, and features a teaser for the next book!

My Review:
Wow. What a fantastic read. Though it was a little slow at the start, I soon became completely immersed in this elaborate, addictive world that Sarah created. Loved Feyre and she is everything you could ask for in a lead character. Tamlin – swoon. Rhysand – bad boy swoon. Loved the romance. Great dialogue and lots of witty banter. Adored all the fantastical elements and the world-building was superb.
The second half of this book was explosive and so gripping – it was difficult to sit it down. One of the things I love most about this author is the fact that she writes books that are a decent length, so we get more story for our money which is awesome. I picked this up for 99p which was superb value. I’ve already ordered the next book and can’t wait until May to see where she takes the story next.

Review: Fallen Crest High #1-4 by Tijan

Today I’d like to talk about my new series addiction – Fallen Crest High from Tijan. I’ve been hearing about this series and this author for years as my lovely sister-in-law Sinead is a huge fan. I have a massive amount of ARCs and books I’ve received from publishers, authors, and publicists to read, and often it’s difficult to find time to read books or series that I’m longing to read (I realize how crazy that sounds!) Anyway, I was in an indulgent mood, so I started book one and I’m up to book five now and I’m totally addicted to this series. It’s so good and each book just gets better and better. I thought I’d share my reviews with you for the series up to this point, and I’ll continue to post reviews on an individual basis for the other books as I read them. If you decide to pick this series up, then I hope you enjoy it as much as I’m enjoying it.

Mason and Logan Kade are two brothers who did their own thing. They were rich and expected to attend her school, Fallen Crest Academy. They chose public school and now Samantha has to live with them. The problem is that she doesn’t care at all: about them, about her friends, about her cheating boyfriend, or even about her parent’s divorce. But maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe change is a good thing.

My Review:
My sister-in-law is a massive fan of Tijan and she is constantly recommending her books to me. I’ve had Fallen Crest High on my Kindle for well over a year (along with tons of others I’m ashamed to admit. I have obsessive compulsive trigger finger when it comes to freebies, NG requests, and signing up for ARCs) and the only reason I decided to read this now is that I have such a bad book hangover after Broken Prince by Erin Watt that I had to find something else similar to read.

I totally get the hype now. While I did have some issues with this book that stopped me from rating it a 5-star read, it was full of teen angst and drama and I lapped it all right up. I love our MC -Sam is a strong character who does her best with the shitty hand of cards she’s been dealt. She is a no-bullshit speaker and she doesn’t really care about what others think. However, that is mainly because she is so emotionally detached and numb. As a coping mechanism, she blanks out a lot of stuff instead of facing up to it. There were a few moments she broke down but I can tell she’s in for one hell of an emotional journey as the series progresses.

Logan and Mason were the bomb. Total assholes on occasions but they are kinda lost and not bad guys underneath the surface.

I love the romance and sex scenes between our couple and I’m totally shipping them.

The writing was quite amateurish at times (especially in the first half) and the book needs more thorough editing. I also felt some actions and reactions came out of nowhere and some scenes lacked emotional complexity. But the plot is superb and it is teen soap opera at it’s best. By the end I was so immersed in the world and the characters I had to consciously pull myself back into the realm of the living.

Always the sign of a great read.

I’m invested, Sinead! I’m totally sucked in now! Pity I can’t jump straight into the next book (have to tackle some ARCs) but I do look forward to continuing this series soon.

Samantha and Mason are together. Everyone knows it. Not everyone is dealing with it. While Mason’s ready to give them the middle finger, there’s one not going away. Her mother. Threats are issued. Ultimatums are given. Even blackmail is used, but only Samantha can put a stop to Analise. However, when a trauma from her past is triggered, she may not have the courage or strength to do what’s needed. If she doesn’t, Mason’s future could be destroyed.

My Review:
The writing and editing were more polished in this book than book one, however, the overall plot wasn’t as good. It was very repetitive in parts and I felt like it dragged a lot – meandering without any real purpose. It was still very entertaining and I’m invested in continuing the series.

As I predicted in my review of book one, Sam is struggling to hold things together in this book as the impact of everything finally hits her. It was difficult to read at times but that is testament to the great characterization. Mason is her rock and I loved him in this book even if he was still a bit mysterious and moody.

Logan is clearly floundering and I wonder what’s in store for him in the future.

Her mother is a total nut job and their father is a complete pansy. How he could sacrifice his kid’s welfare over that psycho is beyond me.

In summary, this was a decent follow up even if the plot let it down in parts.

Actual rating 3.5 stars.

Sam’s first day at Fallen Crest Public doesn’t go well. Some girls want to be her. Some girls want to destroy her. And some just don’t like her. All in all, despite being protected by Mason and Logan, it’s still only the strong survive. Sam will not only have to survive, she needs to learn how to conquer too, but there’s another battle growing. Things are about to come to a disastrous end between the towns, Roussou and Fallen Crest. Sam’s other main dilemma? Keeping Mason and Logan from getting arrested or hospitalized.

My Review:
Best book of the series so far. Damn those bitches are mean, but I love how Sam wanted to try and handle them on her own and how she wasn’t afraid to stand up to them. Logan and Mason were awesome and so protective. The way in which Mason planned to put an end to Kate once and for all gave me chills all over. Even though it was the early hours of the morning there was no way I was putting my Kindle down until I read through those scenes. Explosive. But what I loved most about this installment was how Sam stood head and shoulders above them all at the end – in the way she handled the situation at Quickies. She showed she was the better person. I still don’t like how Mason and Sam are keeping things from one another under the guise of protectiveness. At this stage of their relationship, they should have progressed beyond that. But overall, it was a really gripping read and I’m completely immersed in this world now. Onto the next one 🙂

My mother tried to destroy me. She doesn’t exist to me anymore and my father, the one who raised me and the biological one, are both works in progress. The only two people that I can trust are Mason and Logan, and they’re the two people who I could lose. It won’t happen. I won’t let it. No matter the truth, no matter who loves me, I won’t let anything or anyone come between us.
They’re my world. They’re my life.
They’re my family.

My Review:
Each book in this series just gets better and better. This might have been my favorite instalment yet. Loved it. Loved Mase. The end scenes were very dramatic, emotional, and explosive. Glad Sam has finally wised up and decided she needs to be the one supporting Mason because she was leaning on him way too much. He needs someone looking out for him too. The chemistry between these two is some of the best I’ve ever read – they are seriously smokin’ hot together and it reads so well.

I feel for Logan – he’s a little lost puppy. Hope he finds a girl who’s his equal because he deserves to be happy. Sometimes his OTT banter irritated me and I hope he grows up a little when he reaches Cain U.

Stuff is about to get real in the next one with all this Marissa and Seb-ass-tian drama. Can’t wait!

I really don’t want this series to end; I’m enjoying it far too much.

He and Aubry can barely hold down a civil conversation, but in bed…fireworks. And the closer they get to Quinn’s sister’s wedding, the more he realizes that he might actually like Aubry.

Now it’s up to him to convince her she might actually like him, too.

My Review:
A sizzling-hot read that will leave you begging for more.

This is the second KR book I have read, and I enjoyed this one as much as the first. She is definitely being added to my list of favorite authors as I really enjoy her writing style. This book had everything I love in a romantic novel – in spades. Superb writing and pacing, complex multi-layered characters, strong plot, scorching sexy times, and a total snark-fest. What is not to love?

I can see how some readers might react negatively to Aubry, as she doesn’t come across as a likable character at first. But you need to peel back the layers to understand her character. I enjoyed her immensely and really appreciated how refreshingly different she was as a lead female. She snaps, barks, and spits, but it’s all a defensive mechanism, one she has carefully cultivated over the years. She doesn’t let people in because of her dysfunctional upbringing, and she is crippled with anxiety which means she doesn’t form bonds easily.

Quinn has always pushed her buttons and though they tell each other they don’t like one another, it becomes apparent that an underlying attraction has been bubbling away under the surface for the last year. Fate decides to throw them together and it doesn’t take long for them to end up in bed. The chemistry between our couple was phenomenal and the journey from enemies to lovers to soulmates completely credible.

Quinn is a completely swoon-worthy male lead who is the real deal. His nurturing nature is showcased through his confident support of both Aubry and Jenny as they battle bouts of anxiety. As someone who has dealt with anxiety in the past, I appreciated how well this was written. Sympathetically with bursts of humor. It was raw and real and helped me personally connect to the material.

The witty banter between our couple was hilarious, and I found myself laughing non-stop.

My only complaint is that the last couple of chapters felt rushed, and I also wished it was longer, as I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Quinn or Aubrey. I really want to read Adam and Jules book and I can’t wait until Hope and Daniel’s book is released. I’m definitely hooked on this series.

All in all, this was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks to Barclay PR and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

excerpt:
She pinched the bridge of her nose. “If I say you’re right, am I ever going to live it down?”
He didn’t answer, and she opened her eyes. Their reflection was slightly distorted in the passenger window, but even she could see he had a seriously tense look on his face. She belatedly realized that they were pressed together, her back to his front, and that he was…
Oh my God. She couldn’t resist leaning back into him, just a little. Yep, that’s not a micro penis. A shiver worked its way through her, leaving goose bumps in its wake, and her nipples perked right up, showing through the thin fabric of her T-shirt. There was no way he didn’t feel her reaction, not with his arm creating a band across her ribs, his forearm against the underside of her breasts.
Even as she noticed, he started to release her, his hand sliding over her stomach, but he stopped when he hit her hip, his pinkie finger dipping below the waistband of her shorts, just a little. It wasn’t anywhere near anything vital, but that little intrusion made her moan all the same.
“Fuck.” The word was barely audible, but she felt it in the way his body tensed behind her.
She shivered again, torn between telling him to back off and getting the top button of her jeans all undone for him. If she didn’t make a decision—and fast—he was going to back off again. It was written all over the tension she could feel emanating from his body.
Aubry started to reach for his hand, still undecided on whether she wanted to encourage or threaten him, but he moved, bending down to brace one hand on the truck in front of them, the other still on her hip. The move brought his mouth against her ear, and his harsh exhale made her shake.
She arched against him. She couldn’t help it. Her body took over, a primal part of her knowing he could give her all the pleasure she could handle, and was only too happy to extend an invitation by rubbing her ass against his hard length.
His grip on her hip tightened, but he didn’t try to stop her. “You’re playing a dangerous game.”
She knew. They had to stop for so many reasons, the least of which was that they were on the side of a freaking highway and it was only a matter of time before a car drove past.
But she didn’t want to stop.

When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle…and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart, Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist and the perfect candidate for mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one night stand.

Reid left his life in Chicago far behind him and hasn’t been back, but he’s never been able to escape the guilt he feels about his own painful role in inviting a monster into his baby sister’s life. A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn’t feel he deserves, and their one night together has him wanting more than he should. Especially since she doesn’t know the truth about his past. However, when he finds Lia’s bracelet in his bed, he has the perfect excuse to drive down and surprise her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami. He’s in for an even bigger shock – and a fist to the face – when his past and present collide in the humid Miami weather when he runs into the last person he’d ever expect to see in a tattoo studio: Harper, the sister he betrayed, and the last link to his former life.

Excerpt:
Lia opened the door to her condo and let Reid inside. He’d followed her home on his bike, so they’d been unable to talk, but he’d said nothing once they’d parked in the underground garage.
“Holy shit, Lia,” he said, looking out toward the water. “That’s some view.”
She dropped her keys on the side table, and placed her purse next to them. Sharing details about her wealth only seemed to cause problems. There had been at least two boyfriends who stuck around longer than they really wanted to because of her funds. So she’d never thought to prepare Kenny for the reality of her life, nor had there been opportunity.
Lia walked over to the balcony doors and opened them wide. “Want to go outside for a while? I’ll get us some drinks.”
Reid dragged his hand along his jaw. “I don’t know what I want. My head feels like a car that hasn’t ever had an oil change. Overheated, poorly performing, and full of crap.” The smile he gave her was filled with sadness.
She squeezed his hand and headed to the kitchen. She grabbed a couple of beers from the fridge. Kenny was leaning against the balcony, staring out into the distance. The deep blue rippling waters of Biscayne Bay had soothed her frayed mind on many occasions. She only hoped it was having the same effect on him.
The look on her best friend’s face had torn her apart. Harper had fluctuated between elation and disappointment. And Kenny had looked shell-shocked as he started to put the pieces together, leaving Lia unable and unwilling to pick sides. But the look of abject loneliness on his face when he saw Harper standing with all her friends had forced her to break ranks and stand with him. No one in that situation should be left to stand alone.
“I figured you could use one of these,” Lia said, walking onto the balcony with the drinks.
He took them and placed them on the table next to them. He took both her hands and pulled her toward him. He stroked her skin, as if desperate for contact. “My name is Reid Kennedy . . . but everyone calls me Kenny. Except my sister and parents. I wasn’t trying to deceive you, Lia. It’s just the name I go by.”
“Let’s not worry about that right now. You and Harper are all that matters. We can talk about this at some other point.”
Reid nodded.
“Is it okay to call you Reid?” she asked.
He breathed what she took to be a sigh of relief. “You can call me whatever the fuck you want as long as you are still speaking to me. I’m sorry,” he said, burying his nose into the soft hair at the side of her neck. The scent of him, man and leather, surrounded her, and despite everything going on around them, she was transported back to their previous weekend together, when she’d stripped for him in the warm shades of dusk.
Lia wrapped her arms around his waist. “For what?” she asked.
“For coming down here to make you feel better, only to pull you into all this.”
She didn’t respond immediately, but rubbed her hand up and down his back. It was the kind of gesture she wished her parents had done to her when she was small. Reassuring. Caring even.
He pulled back a little. “Don’t you hate me? For leaving her?” he said quietly.
“When she comes over, are you going to explain why?” She placed her hand over his heart. It beat fiercely.
He covered her hand with his own. “Yes.”

DESPERATE DECISIONS
A Secret that Should Never Have Been Revealed

A dark reality lies hidden under our very eyes.
Since their creation, the Màsala have enforced the destiny of humankind on Earth through the Subterraneans, Angels condemned to carry the weight of death on their shoulders in order to please Fate. Evan, a Subterranean, has denied his own nature in order to protect Gemma, the girl he was sent to kill and with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love.
But what are the consequences of cheating Death?
Five months have gone by since her last encounter with Death, and in spite of having experienced the most intense period of happiness in her life at Evan’s side, Gemma’s instinct reminds her that the game is far from over. Evan, overconfident, lets his guard down, revealing an unmentionable secret—an error that can be paid for only with blood. Death returns to claim Gemma, sending its faithful servants to kill her. Desperate, Evan will do anything to save her, but the menace will seek them out even where they feel safest . . .
The challenge between passion and death will pit the protagonists against each other. In the face of jealousy, betrayal, and emotional devastation, Evan and Gemma find it isn’t easy to escape their fate.

My Review:
Elisa S. Amore doesn’t disappoint with this great second installment in the Touched Saga.

Gemma and Evan are in love and it is so sweet and adorable! Nothing or no one else exists for these two but each other, and they can scarcely bear to be apart. I love their chemistry, and I’m totally sold on the romance. These two belong together. I thought I’d combust alongside our mains if they didn’t get it on! I was a little surprised at the sex scene because it’s more descriptive than you usually find in YA. It’s not overly graphic, so this is more of a caution. I would recommend this for age 15+.

Death is still hunting Gemma, although that part of the plot really only kicks off in the second half of the book. This time, death takes the guise of a familiar face and it is emotional and heartbreaking for everyone involved. I did figure out what was going on a lot earlier than the gang, and there were occasions where I was rolling my eyes at their blatant stupidity.

When I read Touched, I was quite suspicious of Ginerva, but that seems to have been unfounded. She was a great friend to Gemma in this book, and I enjoyed her character a lot. She’s a badass witch who can kick serious angel butt, so what’s not to love about that?!

I love the world Elisa has created, and she is so descriptive in painting that world for the reader. I could easily visualize everything as if I was watching it on a movie screen. The scenes in Heaven/Eden were some of my favorite, and they were so magical and romantic. Swoon. I love the angel and witch combo and the development of those aspects is being consistently built.

Little clues are dotted throughout the book which gradually build to an explosive reveal. Can we just talk about that ending? Wow! My heart was in my mouth reading it! I did predict it (and I was screaming at Gemma in my head for being so blind) but it was still nail-biting and heartbreaking and it ripped me to shreds. I had to read it twice because I just couldn’t believe it happened. Awesome twist, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

We still don’t know what or who Gemma is but it’s pretty transparent at this point – all the clues are stacking up to one obvious conclusion. I won’t say it here in case I spoil it for anyone, but I am hoping this comes out in the next book and that it’s connected to how she will save him.

I did have a few small issues which stopped me rating this 5-stars. For me, the romance totally overshadowed the rest of the plot in the first half of the book, and even though I love them as a couple, and I adore romance, my attention was starting to wander. There were some inconsistencies with both Gemma and Evan’s characters which bugged me a little. For example, Evan is incredibly protective of Gemma but then he makes stupid reckless decisions which jeopardize her safety. Gemma is fierce and brave on the one hand and weepy and whiny on the other. Overall, I enjoy them as characters, but there were some scenes I wish had been written differently. The other aspect I dislike is how Gemma just dumped Peter. So. Not. Cool.

In any event, these minor issues did not detract from my enjoyment. This is a fantastic series and I highly recommend it for lovers of paranormal romance that is heavy on the romance. I cannot wait to read the next book!

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Some quotes I enjoyed from my review copy:

“Love has made me crazy but it’s the sweetest form of madness and I accept it willingly.”

“If your heart stopped it would silence mine forever too. I couldn’t live even one minute knowing you were gone.”

“What you need to believe is that I’m a part of you as much as you are of me. You’re here inside me. Always remember that.”

“His kiss made heaven and earth move for me and I was swept up into an infinite sky studded with stars.”

Lines are blurred as Lex becomes less the villain she’s always painted him to be…and starts turning into something more. Gabi has always hated the way she’s been just a little bit attracted to him—no computer-science major should have that nice of a body or look that good in glasses—but “Lex Luthor” is an evil womanizer. He’s dangerous. Gabi should stay far, far away.

Then again, she’s always wanted a little danger.

My Review:
Having loved the first book in this series, I was eagerly anticipating the next installment and I couldn’t wait to read Lex and Gabi’s story. Let me tell you – I was not disappointed! This is RVD doing what she does best – snarky, witty romantic comedy at its best. I totally loved it and flew through it in no time.

Lex is a total manwhore and not shying away from that fact. Gabi and him share Ian as a bestie and they are constantly sniping at one another. Except they both secretly lust after the other and their constant bickering is only a front.

Ian has sworn Lex off his “sister” so Lex has consciously steered clear. Until now. He has actually been pining after her for years and their sexual chemistry is off the charts.

Lex is a fantastic character. A total manslut tech genius with a heart of gold underneath. Gabi is a bit of a contradiction – innocent and inexperienced but well able to stand her ground and enter into a constant battle of wills with Lex.

Their sexy back-and-forth had me roaring with laughter and smirking at my Kindle. When they finally get it on it was explosive without being overly graphic.

Most of the plot is centered around their romance and the Wingmen plot pretty much took a backseat. But it worked and there was never a dull moment.

It would be easy to get mad at Lex’s blatant sexism and hurtful barbed comments, but you just have to take it tongue-in-cheek and go with the flow. The same could be said for the premise. Lex has lusted after Gabi for four years and they spend a fair amount of time together given Ian is their BFF. I found it hard to believe that he stayed away from her for that long, or that he would allow his bestie to dictate his heart for such a lengthy period. But I tossed logic out the window and just went with it.

The writing was great and pacing was spot-on – no skimming in this book!

All in all, this is another fab, funny, warm, sweet, sexy read from the amazingly talented Ms. Rachel. I’m sad to see this series end but I’ve no doubt she’s many more fantastic stories lined up for us.

Actual 4.5 Stars.

Passionate couple kissing

Excerpt:

I hated him.
HATED him.
Hate, hate, hate. I chanted the words to myself that very next morning as I stomped toward his ridiculously expensive house, next to the ridiculously nice lake, with his ridiculously loud red Mercedes parked out front. Jackass.
I’d be doing society a favor if I set it on fire.
Seriously.
The thing was probably filled with so much bodily fluid and disease that if he got in a car accident he’d infect the entire freeway and start a citywide epidemic.
I shuddered.
I compartmentalized Lex into two boxes.
The first box was Childhood Lex, the friend who used to hang out with Ian and me before he moved across town, never to be seen again. He used to ride with me to school, and when I was sick he gave me my own box of Kleenex—never mind that he stole it from his teacher’s desk. The point is, Childhood Lex was a keeper.
Box number two?
Asshole Lex, also known as the version I was walking toward. The Lex I met when I was eighteen, who momentarily stunned me speechless with his godlike beauty, had been a figment of my overactive, sad, hormone-riddled imagination.
On the outside? The perfect man.
With a brooding and sultry smile.
Biceps the size of my head.
Who gave me the distinct feeling that if I ran my hands over his buzzed hair I’d orgasm before he even touched me.
Whatever. I was over it. So over it.
A lot of people had stupid crushes when they were eighteen, right?
Now all I saw when I looked into his stormy blue eyes was syph or the clap, and that was being generous. The dude was a walking STD and seriously tried every nerve I had. He was an ass. Plain and simple, no sugar coating. He was the type of guy who’d tell a chick that she looked fat in a dress or who refused to share the communal breadbasket. See! He couldn’t even adhere to typical manners during mealtime! Just thinking about him had me tied up in knots.
Last year, when I went shopping and stupidly invited Ian along—which of course meant Lex had to come—I was told in no uncertain terms that if I would just stop drinking chocolate milk in the morning I’d be able to fit into a smaller size.
He’d smiled.
His dimples had deepened.
He’d even crossed his arms as if to say, Look, I did you a favor, pat me on the back.
Instead I had kicked him in the balls and tried to give him a black eye, clocking Ian in the face.
My point? Lex. Was. The. Devil.
I made a point of only hanging out with Lex when absolutely necessary, and even then I almost always had Ian as a buffer. But now that he was playing love nest with my ex-roomie, Blake? Well, I was on my own.
Lex opened the door after my third aggressive knock. Black sweatpants hung low on his hips, a vintage Mariners shirt fell open around his neck, and he was wearing black-framed glasses that made his eyes more appealing than should be legal.
“Sunshine,” he said, his smirk deepening as he crossed his burly arms over his chest.
“Dickhead.” I smiled sweetly. “New glasses? They look thicker than last time.”
“Better to see you with.” He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing into tiny slits. “There they are.” He reached for one of my boobs.
I slapped his hand away so hard my palm stung.
“Probably not the best way to treat your new male clients.” He shook his hand and turned towards the living room leaving the door wide open. Manners were completely lost on him.
Gritting my teeth, I slammed the door behind me and took off my shoes because I knew if I didn’t he’d give me hell.
He was a freak like that.
For as much ass as he got, it was shocking how much Lysol he used around the house. His clothes were never wrinkled; everything was pristine.
Even his breath.
Damn him.
He drank coffee like a Starbucks employee but never had coffee breath.
It was almost painful, staring him in the face, knowing that everything on the outside appeared perfect—but didn’t match the inside at all, not even close!
Beauty like Lex’s was dangerous and wickedly tempting, like something out of a paranormal romance novel. Sometimes, at night, when I dreamed of Lex getting hit by a car, I imagined him as a vampire roaming the streets in his favorite black sweats, shirtless, shimmering under the streetlights, just waiting for whores to line up so he could take a few bites.
A pencil flew by my head.
“Yo.” Lex’s eyebrows shot up. “We have a lot of work to do if we’re going to get you ready for the next two clients. Daydream about chicks on your own time.”
“I’m not a lesbian.”
He bit on his bottom lip, sinking back in his chair as his eyes slowly roamed from my mismatched socks all the way up to my head. “Okay, whatever you say, Gabs.”
I will not commit homicide. I will not commit homicide. “You know,” I said as I tossed my purse onto the table, “it’s offensive that you assume all lesbians dress like crap.” So what? I was wearing a ratty white T-shirt and ripped jeans, and I was pretty sure I still had mascara on from the night before. It was my Lex repellant. He hated sloppiness.
“Offensive.” He nodded. “Also true . . .” He used the spare pencil from behind his ear to slide my purse over to the farthest side of the table. “It wouldn’t kill you to wear something other than jeans and T-shirts, Gabs.” He sighed. “Say it with me: dresssss—”
I grabbed the pencil from his hand, broke it into two pieces, and handed them back to him. “I wear dresses, just not for you. Dresses are your kryptonite, especially short black ones. I refuse to be a part of your ‘shower time.’”
He snorted. “You wish.”
“Yes. Every night when I go to sleep I pray for Lex to dream of me while he jerks off because yet another girl refused to follow his instructions in bed : ‘Damn it, use the manual!’” I said, using my best imitation of Lex’s voice. I’d only heard him shout instructions to a girl once, and it had scarred me for life. What the hell are you doing? Do I look like I’m satisfied? There’s a diagram! Ugh.
Lex rolled his eyes. “Very funny, and the manual is there for a reason. Do you even know how many chicks get confused when I call out sexual positions? It’s like, get there faster, you know?”
My feelings were torn between fascination and disgust. “So,” I changed the subject. “Let’s train, because I have about ten years worth of Organic Chem homework.”
Lex sighed and held out his hand.
“No.” I crossed my arms. “I don’t need help.”
Okay, I needed help, desperately needed help, and Lex wasn’t just passably smart but a certified genius, at least when he applied himself. I refused to ask him to go over my homework just because Organic Chem was, to me, like reading a foreign language.
He cleared his throat.
I didn’t move.
Finally, he stood, slowly walked over to the end of the table, and fished the chem book from my oversized purse. “What chapter?”
“Lex—”
“If I’m teaching you Organic Chem, at least say Professor Lex.”
“Listen very closely, Lex.” I went over and jerked my book out of his hands. “I didn’t need your help last year when I almost failed biology, and I sure as hell don’t need your help now. Let’s just get this training done so I can go home and suffer in silence, alright?”
“Fine.” He dropped my book against the table and then, without warning, grabbed me by my shoulders and pushed me against the counter that bordered the kitchen. My butt hit the cupboard . “Up until now we’ve been helping people find their perfect match. Basically acting like a wingman so that the idiots of this world see the girl who’s been standing in front of them all along .”
Why was he standing so close? Did we have to be touching? I told my body not to respond to his proximity, but Lex was magnetic, even if every part of him was evil. My brain was having trouble functioning while his large palms were pressed into the tops of my shoulders.
“Okay.” I swallowed. “And now that you’re allowing guys to become clients of Wingmen Inc., I basically do the same thing. Give them confidence, help them capture the one girl who’s always seen them as the friend—or worse, who they’ve been invisible to.”
“What’s that like, I wonder?” Lex still didn’t release me. “Being invisible . . . Maybe next time a dude ignores you, take notes.”
And another insult.
“Lex.” I huffed out a breath. “Just get on with it.”
“Right.” His eyes momentarily locked on mine before he rubbed the bridge of his nose where his glasses were perched. It was not sexy. It wasn’t. Really. That. Sexy. “So whenever we take on a new client, we give them a list of questions, meet them in a public place, and then use the power of human emotions like jealousy and curiosity to get the other person interested. That’s where you come in. If another girl sees our client as desirable, he becomes desirable.”
“That easy?”
“Sort of.” Lex leaned forward. “But you can’t suck.”
“Suck?”
“At anything.” His lips hovered near my mouth. He was starting to freak me out. I wanted to run away, but I was pinned.
“Lex, if you kiss me I will bite your tongue off. I swear.”
“If I was actually kissing you”—Lex released one of my shoulders and placed a finger against my mouth—“you’d know it. This, my frumpy friend, is training.”
His lips descended.
They pressed against mine, then pulled back. “Yeah.” He shook his head. “Gabs, you’re going to need to open your mouth a bit more. Guys are stupid. They always assume that more tongue means better kissing, when the opposite is true, but you still need to have your lips parted, not locked down like Fort Knox.”
“What’s happening?” I tried to push away from him.
Lex rolled his eyes. “Gabs, believe me, this is all business. You can even keep your hand on my junk the whole time.”
“What!” I roared.
“So you know without a doubt that nothing about you turns me on.” He grinned menacingly. “Seriously, I don’t mind.”
“I do!”
“Hey!” He chuckled. “I was just trying to help.”
“Grabbing your penis is not the answer, Lex!”
“Weird, because it so often is.”
“I hate today.”
“Is it the rain?” He frowned.
“It’s not—”
“It is.”
“Stop that!” I shoved him. “Hurry up and grade my kissing skills so I can go home and study.”
“Kissing, hand holding, hugging, cuddling, laughing, winking—just a few things you need to master.” He was firing off so many horrible, body-numbing words.
“Just hurry up,” I grumbled in a defeated voice as I tried to block out the fact that he was a good-looking ass who offended me with every single breath he took.
“Ah . . .” Lex held up his hand. “One never hurries a kiss.”
“What about a passionate kiss?”
“A passionate kiss isn’t hurried, it’s frenzied. Damn, don’t you know anything?”
Heat swamped my cheeks.
“How many guys have you kissed, Gabs?”
“Plenty!” Five. I’d kissed five.
“You blush down your neck when you lie.” Lex cupped my chin and then brought his lips down against mine again. “Part.”
Sighing against his mouth, I relaxed my lips while his slid across.
He pulled back, wearing a frown of irritation. “A bit more, Gabs. Guys want access.”
I kept my eyes open.
So did he.
I didn’t want him assuming I was into it, which was probably his exact line of thinking. Only keeping my eyes open was an entirely raw experience, watching him watch me while I felt him.
I shivered.
“Cold?” That stupid smirk was back.
“Frigid.” I glared, putting myself down before he had a chance to.
“You read my mind.” He nodded seriously. “Now stop being a bitch, and let me teach you how to kiss.”
“I know how to kiss!” I don’t know what came over me—maybe it was the need to prove myself, or possibly it was just stress over the entire situation. Needing to stay in school and hating that he was the answer, I wrapped my arms around his neck and jumped, my hips colliding with his as I mauled his mouth with as much passion as I could conjure up, this time closing my eyes and putting everything I had into it.
With a growl, Lex pushed me back against the countertop. As my butt collided with the edge, his tongue plunged into my mouth and his hands dug into my hair, pulling it free from its ponytail while he changed positions his lips demanding a punishing kiss from a different angle as his he gave my hair a harder tug back.
I grasped at his T-shirt, pulling him closer and nearly falling backward into the sink.
And then, just when I was in danger of losing myself to the kiss that would probably be the best kiss of my life, I bit down on his bottom lip.
That move didn’t work out the way I’d planned, not at all. In my head it was smart. I’d piss him off, get him to pull back and leave me alone.
It did nothing of the sort.
Nothing of the sort at] all.
With a hiss he pulled back, fire blazing in his eyes. For a split second that seemed to go on for an eternity, he hovered and I waited, both of us on the edge of something. He wet his lips, I mimicked the movement, and then, like a snake, he struck. His mouth fused to mine in a punishing kiss, one that bruised my mouth while imprinting its essence on my soul.

Actual rating 4.5 stars

Another fun, sexy, witty read from the authors of the fabulous Miss Match.

Lacy has been struggling to cope in the aftermath of a terrible personal tragedy. As an up and coming musician, with studio time banked, she should be working on new music, but she has a bad case of writer’s block. In desperation, she reached out to an online forum and has made a connection with another musician known only as Folx. It’s seven months later and both of them have developed feelings for one another. Then Lacy gets thrown a lifeline – the opportunity to tour with a new sought-after band, and she is immediately entranced by Eli, the banjo player. Lead singer Jax has also caught her eye, but it’s Eli she is continually drawn to.

As Lacy grows closer to Eli, she is consumed with guilt over Folx. Although they have arranged to meet up (to attend her sister’s wedding) she isn’t in a relationship with him so is it really cheating? I thought it was an interesting and intriguing concept and both mains battled to make sense of their feelings.

Fate has intervened and it seems like our two are destined for one another until Lacy comes to a rather rash conclusion which has her chasing the wrong man. It was at this point that I started getting very frustrated because the truth was obviously right under her nose but she was a bit dense to not even consider the possibility that she might be mistaken.

Eli is amazing, so sweet and considerate and caring. Lacy treats him pretty poorly at times and I wanted to throttle her. However, she clearly isn’t in the right frame of mind, suffering in the aftermath of what happened with her fiancé. So, I made allowances.

I love rocker romances and I enjoyed the world created in Love Struck. I thoroughly enjoyed all the musical and touring scenes, though it was a lot tamer than some of the rock star romances I’ve previously read.

Initially, I was a little disappointed with this book as I had high expectations having adored Miss Match. The pacing was off at the start and the first 15% was very slow and bogged down in unnecessary details which pulled me out of the story. I was also rather unimpressed with the writing in the early chapters. I have read seven or eight of Laurelin Paige’s books at this stage and her writing is superb. I haven’t read Kayti’s debut yet though I plan to. So, I was expecting the writing to be above par. Frustrated, I actually stopped, went off and read another book, and then came back to it. I’m really glad I did as I ended up completely loving it. The pace picked up; it was steady and flowed much better after that. The writing also improved and was more in line with my expectation.

Lacy is a great leading lady and Eli a credible swoon-worthy leading man. Together, they make the most beautiful music (cheesy, I know) and their chemistry was scorching hot and thoroughly believable.

Jax, uh. I hated him. He was so selfish and rude. Not mad about Kat either but we aren’t given a hell of a lot to understand what really is going on with her. I loved the small glimpses we got of Andy and Blake and loved that we got to see them tie the knot. Yay!

While there are plenty of humorous moments (that scene in the lobby. Argh! So cringey but so, so funny) I didn’t think it was quite up to the standard of Miss Match in that regard. To be fair, that’s a very high benchmark as Miss Match is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. The romance and sex scenes were brilliantly written and I loved all the angst/frustration and the to-ing and froing of both mains. Emotions were scattered and it was very tense/fraught at times and I lapped it up!

All in all, this was another great read. If you are finding it a little slow at the start, don’t give up – keep reading and I promise it will be worth your while. I can’t wait to see what this duo come up with next.

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for supplying an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
