Torn between duty and survival, nothing can be the same.

Everything Ivy Morgan thought she knew has been turned on its head. After being betrayed and then nearly killed by the Prince of the Fae, she’s left bruised and devastated—and with an earth-shattering secret that she must keep at all costs. And if the Order finds out her secret, they’ll kill her.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in on Ivy, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.

My Review:
So, I’m a bit torn over this book (pun intended) because although I did enjoy it (it’s JLA, so come on like) and there were loads of things I loved about it (Ren and Tink anyone?) there were a few niggly issues which stopped me engaging in my usual gush-fest; things that prevented me from rating this a five-star read.

But I’ll start with the good stuff. I loved how Ivy behaved in this book. She gets on with things, refusing to be seen as altered or injured or weak, and she never indulges in self-pity. She wants to take control and deal with things head-on. Rock-on Ivy.

Ren is still a hot, sexy, sweet guy and I totally ship him with Ivy. Yes, he lost his way a little but I forgave him because he recovered spectacularly. I enjoyed the romantic scenes between our couple even if they were a bit scant overall.

TINK!!! Omg, I loved Tink in Wicked but he’s even better in this. And that revelation – ha, ha! Genius. The scene where he is “outed” is hysterically funny and I was chuckling away to myself.

The latter scenes involving the Prince were awesome. Creepy, a bit debauched and depraved, but awesome all the same. And I want to help Ivy string that Breena (Breana??) one up.

What I love the most about this book – and this is classic JLA – is the witty banter between Ivy and Ren, Ivy and Tink, and Tink and Ren. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

The writing is superb as usual, the characters are well developed, and the world building was decent.

Probably the biggest issue I had was with the actual storyline. It was too predictable and there wasn’t enough happening to drive the plot forward. Certain aspects of the story lacked depth, in my opinion, and I wonder how well they would hold up to more detailed scrutiny. I could be specific but I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I’ll say no more. I also felt the pacing was off which I was most surprised at because Jennifer’s books are almost always perfectly paced with a mix of action and romance that flows consistently. I actually struggled to get into the first twenty percent of this book and I was starting to get bored. Thankfully, it picked up after that and it became a non-issue thereafter.

Overall, Torn was still a very good read – it just didn’t blow my mind in the way most of Jen’s books do. But I’m still very invested in this series because I love Ivy, Ren, and Tink, and I want to find out how the story concludes. If you enjoyed Wicked, and you are a fan of Jennifer’s, then you’ll most likely enjoy it.

This review will appear on my blog in due course: http://myyanabookobsession.com

Thanks to Jennifer and her publicist, Kelly Simmon, for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Excerpt:
I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince.
“You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.”
My hand twitched.
Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.”
That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?”
His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine.
My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.”
That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.”
“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.”
The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.”
Fine hairs rose on my arms.
“What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.”
“I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid.
“Really? I will have to beg to differ on that. You see, humans surround us. So many of them, and I have an extraordinary appetite.” His eyes appeared to glimmer as his gaze slithered from the top of my curly head down to my toes. “A rather impressive appetite for many, many things.”
“Okay. First off, ew.” My lip curled. “Secondly, I don’t want to hear about any of your appetites.”
One dark eyebrow rose. “Oh, but you should know that I could kill twenty of these humans in less than five seconds and feed on the rest, leaving them to believe that it was this little red-headed girl who murdered these innocent people.” His voice dropped even lower as he leaned in and icy air brushed my cheek. “You deny me this, those lives will be on your hands, little bird.”
Anger flushed hotly as my eyes met his. There wasn’t a single part of me that doubted anything he said. He had me. God, I hated to admit it, but he had me.

“Never forget that I was your first real kiss. Never forget that you’ll be my last.
And never stop loving me between all of them.
Never stop, Charlie.
Never forget.”

Silas races against time as more truths unravel, while others twist tighter together. And now, the stakes are higher as Silas’ control slips and others begin to point fingers. Charlie is in trouble and he must be the one to bridge the chasm between their past and their present. Because somewhere between I love yous and Never Nevers and Never Agains, a truth they can’t imagine, beckons to be found.

“Where are you, Charlie?”

My Review:
I really love Silas and Charlie and some things are starting to make sense though it’s still very mysterious. My only complaint is regarding the length, it was way too short, and why is it taking so long to release the next installment? I really feel if you are going to serialize a story in this way then you should release a new installment every month. Still excellent though and I’m anxiously awaiting the next one.

Picture1

My Review:
Sizzling hot chemistry, wicked, witty banter, conniving families, and a corporate world in meltdown mode, this book was totally drool-worthy, and I lapped it right up. Kendall Ryan has delivered in spades with this new series. I am already salivating at the prospect of what’s coming next, and after that ending? Damn, I need the next installment RIGHT NOW.

I think I’m supposed to hate Noah but I totally loved him. He is loud, obnoxious, and totally inappropriate at times, but also an absolute sweetheart, with a genuine fondness for Olivia, and a fervent desire to protect the business their fathers built and ensure the employees have a future to look forward to. He’s also sexy as sin. I don’t know how Olivia ever thought she could resist him.

They have both secretly harbored crushes on each other since their teenage years but neither will admit it yet. Their hysterical back-and-forth banter made me laugh out loud and Noah’s persistent attempts at seduction definitely raised my blood pressure.

Olivia is the perfect modern-day career woman. Driven and hard-working, she is determined to turn the business around. She is starting to realize that Noah has the same goals and ambitions and that they need each other in order to bring the company forward and halt all the greedy corporate bloodsuckers waiting in the wings. I sense they will make a formidable team, both in and out of the bedroom. But that is yet to be seen.

Character development was strong but I expect no less from Kendall Ryan. She writes great characters with spunk and tenacity and plenty of interesting flaws. But it’s the wonderful dialogue between our two mains and the simmering chemistry that is bubbling away under the surface that made this book the perfect read.

I’m totally hooked, and I cannot wait to continue this series.

Highly recommended for fans of sexy romantic comedy.

Quinn
I’d say I’m down on my luck, but that’s an understatement. I’m flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry and in hiding with my little sister at the age of twenty-one, I’ve never been so desperate. I’ve hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can’t refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There’s nothing I won’t do to keep her safe. I make the rules and I’m not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren’t so clear anymore.

Andrew
She’s an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I’ve never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn’t meant to be controlled, so I’m forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I’ve finally met my match, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.

HIS_FacebookAd1_edited-2

My Review:
A modern-day Pretty Woman that will leave you with all the feels. I adored this well-written, character-driven story that ended with a fantastic HEA.

I devoured His in one sitting, staying up until 4am to finish it. This is my second Brenda Rothert book (the other one was amazing too) and it most definitely won’t be my last. Boy, can this woman write a great yarn!

Andrew and Quinn were great characters, both dealing with the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Andrew lost his father in 9/11 and he has been solely focused and driven ever since. After managing to extricate himself from a more-recent nasty situation, he is hell-bent on avoiding relationships and only engaging in sexual one-nighters that he’s paid for. As you do. When fiesty Quinn enters his life he finds himself eating his words. Very quickly one night becomes a six-month contract and thus our story begins.

Quinn is running from a hidden past and doing everything in her power to keep herself and her younger sister Bethy away from the person chasing them. They have been barely surviving on the streets these last four years and when she crosses paths with Andrew it couldn’t come at a better time. She has literally reached rock-bottom.

I really enjoyed Quinn’s character, especially how she had matured as a result of her life experiences. She grew up protected and cared for and money was no object. Overnight, all that she had known was gone. Driven by a need to protect Bethy, she has forsaken all that she used to take for granted. When she is thrust into Andrew’s world, she is uncomfortable with the excess and the obscene wealth and, as a reader, we really get to see how much she has grown and developed. She didn’t want to sit around his house being pampered, so she went out and volunteered with the homeless. In the process, Andrew’s perspective on things began to change and his admiration and respect for Quinn accelerated.

I loved how patient Andrew was with Quinn, waiting until she was fully ready to consummate their relationship. The slow build of their romance was beautiful, not without its angsty moments, but it was credible and I believed in their chemistry.

Andrew became so protective of Quinn and it was so sweet. Ah swoon, he was perfect. And that epilogue? Amazing – loved it so much!

Most of the book focused on their relationship, with the other subplot only picking up in the last third of the book. I did think it was a little rushed and there was an opportunity to add more conflict and drama, but, to be fair, it didn’t dent my enjoyment of the book, as it really was a fantastic read.

I enjoy Brenda’s writing style, the book flowed at a consistent pace, and it was well edited.

I did find it a little bizarre that Dawson picked a homeless girl to bring to his boss. Surely, a man like Andrew would have gone to a discreet, high-class escort agency to get his hook-ups? I was also wary of Bean and it seemed out of character that Quinn would trust her sister with anyone, even if Bean had been their friend for two years.Anyway, I was able to overlook these issues and just enjoy it.

In summary, this was a great read and one I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Excerpt:
My fingers tightened around the slender remote. “I was thinking that if the prince can sense me, why hasn’t he showed up here?”
“I don’t know.” Tink came down to the coffee table and started marching across it. I’m not the prince, but if I was the prince, I’d be buying time.”
“Buying time?” I scooted to the edge of the couch.
“Yeah, because he’s got to win you over.” Tink swiped up the straw he’d had in his Coke. It was nearly the size of him. “That’s basically what he has to do if he wants to impregnate you.”
I cringed, like a full body cringe. “Please do not use the word impregnate ever again.”
“Why? That’s what he wants to do.” He started dancing with the straw, the kind of dancing you see in the clubs. Hips gyrating all over the place. “He knows coercing or tricking you isn’t going to get the deed done, so he’s probably trying to learn how not to be a sexed up dickhead.”
“Sexed up dickhead?” I repeated.
“Uh-huh.” Tink dipped the straw as one would a dancer. “Remember when I was telling you how I saw the prince getting it on with three females once? He’s totes sexed up. And he’s a dickhead. In other words, he has no empathy or compassion. No humanity.”
“Most fae don’t.”
Tink twirled the straw. “Yeah, but the ancients are worse. They’re as far away from human as you can get. He’s going to have to work on wooing you.”
I slowly shook my head. “That’s…” There were no words.
“That’s what I’d do.” Tink dropped the straw and whipped around toward me. “Or he’s plotting something major and any moment he’s going to knock down the front door and storm the place.”
“Wow.” A fine shiver curled down my spine. “That’s really a relaxing thought.”
He zipped over to the couch and sat on the arm. He tipped his head back and stared up at me. “Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.”
I just looked at him, because other than ordering shit off of Amazon, the only strength he had was the unique ability to annoy the crap out of me while somehow still managing to be endearing.
Tink grinned. “Trust me, Ivy. The Prince is not going to want to mess with me.”

Remembering Everly Quote Graphic #2

Remembering Everly TP Release Day Blitz Excerpt

Secrets.
They had the ability to destroy lives, obliterate relationships and sabotage even the strongest partnerships. Big or small . . . it didn’t matter. Even the tiniest white lie had the power to corrode—to shatter and dismantle everything you loved.
I’d carried a secret so big, for so long that sometimes I felt physically weak from its weight. I had thought I could carry its burden to my grave—that eventually its truth would die along with me.
But secrets never die.
They live on far longer than we do, and they always find their way to the surface.
Mine certainly did.
Sitting alone in the apartment I shared with my fiancé, I gently rolled the smooth green stone between my thumb and forefinger, over and over, remembering the day it was returned to me.
In all our years together, I’d never seen August so cold. So lifeless.
It frightened me to my core.
But I still hadn’t told anyone. It had been three days and I had yet to tell my fiancé or best friend about the events that had taken place in that bridal shop. As far as Ryan and Sarah knew, August had rudely interrupted my bridal appointment to tell me he had his memories back—that was all.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Why hadn’t I elaborated? I didn’t want to admit my shame. I couldn’t share this secret, my darkest lie. What would they think of me? I was the reason August had been in that hospital bed for two years. And the worst part? I’d lied about it—to everyone.
Even those closest to me. Even August. I was the worst kind of human.
I knew Ryan would tell me the opposite. He would comfort me as I told him the truth, holding me as I shared my story about the awful truth from that night.
There was no mugger.
There was only me.

Based on a Norwegian legend
A Sealed Fate
An Angel of Death
A Forbidden Love

“As seductive as Meet Joe Black. As mysterious as City of Angels. As powerful as Twilight.”

What are you willing to sacrifice when the only person who can save you is the same one who has to kill you?

After vampires and werewolves, after wizards and fallen angels, a new breed of Angels is here to usher you into their dark world. An ancient, deadly, inescapable race.
No one can see them. They’re shadows of destiny. They’re knights of death. They’re the Subterraneans and they’re here to claim our lives.
Commanded by a mysterious congregation called the Màsala, the Angels of Death ensure that each man’s destiny takes its due course on Earth.
But what happens when love intervenes?
Can an Angel of Death deny his own nature and challenge destiny?
Can love rebel against fate?

When Gemma’s eyes first meet the dark, piercing gaze of Evan James, an ominous shadow creeps into her life, ultimately leading her to face her destiny. She doesn’t realize Evan is one of Death’s soldiers and that Death is summoning her.
Her time is up: Gemma must die . . . and Evan has been sent to kill her.
But what if she’s the only one who can truly see him?

Against every rule. Against fate itself. Against everything and everyone. A story of forbidden love and star-crossed destinies.

Dark. Romantic. Dangerous.

Touched combines devastating passion and unconfessable secrets, heartrending decisions and deep emotions, giving life to a love story as intense as the feelings that unite Evan and Gemma, as inescapable as the destiny that looms over them . . .

My Review:
Touched is one of the most endearing romantic books I’ve ever read and one which totally took my breath away. Elisa S. Amore is a gifted writer and her prose is simply stunning. I was highlighting like a crazy person, as there is a multitude of sentences that are beautifully crafted. I adore her writing style and it’s clear she is naturally talented.

Gemma has lived in relative obscurity in Lake Placid with her hard-working diner-owning parents, and her two best friends – Peter and her books. She is an excellent student, who gets good grades and never gives her parents an ounce of trouble. She yearns to experience the type of sweeping, passionate romance she has read about in her books. She is completely oblivious to the fact that her BFF, Peter, is in love with her. He hasn’t said anything to her because he’s afraid of ruining their friendship.

One fateful day in the woods changes everything. There she sees someone she shouldn’t be able to: Evan, an Angel of Death who has been sent to kill her. Inexplicably drawn to one another, Touched is the story of their romance and how they deal with the obstacles and challenges to their love.

This book is so romantic. It goes beyond swoon-worthy, and heart-stopping, into a realm all on its own. While it could be argued that it’s insta-love, it’s actually not. Although they feel an instant connection or attraction, their love story is a slow, gradual sensual build-up that had me feeling everything Gemma and Evan felt. Which brings me nicely onto emotional complexity and characterisation. Both of which were superb in this book. It is told in both Gemma and Evan’s point of view, which I always love, and the emotions bled off the pages of my Kindle. I felt every emotion skin-deep, heart-deep. I felt the pain, heartache, joy, longing, and the frantic urgency to save one another. Be still my heart. Those sections, in particular, were stunningly written. So poetic. Beautiful.

Secondary characters are solidly developed too though I wish Peter hadn’t been relegated to such a small part by the end of the book.

I loved the concept of the Angels (Subterraneans) as Angels of Death or Executioners and the addition of Ginerva, a witch who is supposed to be their natural enemy. The fantasy aspect was well developed, and an original and fresh take on Angels mythology. And the overriding concept – how can you kill the one you love – hooked me in the first place. That and the stunning cover.

I did find parts of the inner monologue, in both Gemma and Evan’s sections, repetitive and in my opinion some of that could have been cut. I also didn’t like how dismissive Gemma was of Peter who was supposed to be her best friend. Once Evan appeared on the scene, she pretty much forgot all about him which wasn’t nice. The plot of this book is very reminiscent of Twilight, and though I love Twilight, and it wasn’t really a big issue, I wish it had been a little more original. Those are my only complaints, though, and they are minor because overall I really loved this book.

It’s obvious that Gemma has some kind of gift or power that I assume will become transparent as the series progresses. I can’t help wondering if she is a witch? Or descendent from a witch? Pure speculation on my part and I could be way off track. I’m intrigued to find out in later books!

Overall, this was a truly spell-binding read. If you adore gushing, heart-stopping romance, set within a well-developed fantasy world with complex characterisation and beautiful prose, then you will love Touched. I can’t wait for the next book and I hope it isn’t too long before it’s released.

Some of my fav quotes:

“My mom always said that sooner or later all those stories I read would muddle up my perception of the world, upsetting my mental equilibrium and blurring the line between reality and illusion until I lost my grip on things. She wasn’t all wrong; I’d always been a thousand miles from reality…”

“My eyes were lost in his and his in mine, exploring unknown places, and I feared I wouldn’t be able to contain the emotion that flooded through me.”

“You need to learn to seize the day. Shyness is a lasso that binds the wings each of us has. Only if you untie it can you fly.”

“And yet, why should it matter if an event was real or dreamed, if you really experienced it? No matter what you called it, it existed. It was an emotion you felt. A memory you kept.”

“From time to time a soft lock caressed her face and I found myself gazing at it ravenously, as captivated as thief staring at treasure.”

“You’re my world, Gemma. The only way I can lose everything is if I lose you. I’d rather be damned forever than live an eternity without you.”

Thanks to the author for providing a gift copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Peter and Gemma have been friends since childhood. Peter has always been the one Gemma has turned to. It is his shoulder she cries on, and it is he who knows her better than anyone else. And, for as long as he can remember, Peter has seen Gemma as more than just a friend. She is the only girl he has ever loved, the only one he would be willing to sacrifice everything for. But how can he confess his feelings without ruining what they have? Perhaps the right moment is a trip to Split Rock Falls, the spectacular waterfalls not too far from town. There, surrounded by the beauty of unspoiled woods and crystal waters, Peter will finally be able to reveal what is in his heart, and Gemma will understand that the two of them are meant for each other. But Peter does not realize that Gemma’s destiny has already been written…

We meet several characters from Touched in this prequel, where the threads of love, friendship and suspense intertwine in a storyline that is direct and at the same time full of twists and turns, simple yet unexpected.

My Review:
This was a really short, cute, fun read and a great addition to the series. It follows Gemma and Peter and their friends on a day out. It was full of witty banter and laugh out loud moments. Poor Peter. He has it bad for Gemma but she is completely oblivious. I really felt for the guy. The paranormal revelation at the end was intriguing, and having read Touched, it adds to the mystery of who or what Gemma actually is, or what gifts or powers she has. Definitely worth reading if you have read Touched. Though the author recommended reading this short after Touched, I think it can equally be read beforehand without giving anything away.

It was very well-written and I’m really enjoying this author’s writing style.

Tough and independent, 17-year-old Abby lets very few people into her inner circle. It’s common knowledge in her Kentucky town that she deals drugs, but not even her closest friends know why. But when a deal goes south and Abby’s suddenly in danger, she finds herself reluctantly forced to lean on daredevil Logan—a boy whose restless spirit matches her own.

Logan has his own reasons for wanting to keep Abby at arms’ length. But he never expected to find in her the one person who might help him face the demons he’s tried so hard to run from.

Together, Abby and Logan will have to make a decision: let their current circumstances weigh them down forever…or fight for the future they both thought was impossible.

EXCERPT:
Abby
People near the stage scream and clap and I’m about ready to throw my cell against the wall. Stupid, stupid boy and stupid me for stupidly somewhat liking him and him thinking he can get away with not answering me.
“Give it up for our boy Logan.”
My eyes rip up, go for the stage, and my mind shifts into reverse, fast-forward, rewind, and then that smile that’s associated with the devil slides across my face.
Logan stands strong on the stage. Guitar strapped across his chest. Baseball cap backwards on his black hair. And when he strikes the strings of the guitar, those biceps flex beautifully.
That chord just struck a lot deeper than anyone could have imagined. Past my bones, past my muscles, and it’s created a nice warmth that’s curling around my belly. Liquid warmth.
The logical part of my brain demands that I walk away, but he’s the one that scared me by not answering back. He’s the one that’s causing all these alien emotions stirring in my veins.
Yeah, I shouldn’t kiss Logan. I should definitely leave a boy like that alone. But he returned and he’s the one that climbed onto the stage and is looking addictively sexy with that guitar.
Yep, shouldn’t kiss him, but I already told Rachel, I’m going to kiss the guitarist tonight. Wouldn’t want that one to be a lie, now, would I?
