In the Lunar Colonies, scientific advances are the key to survival.

Seventeen-year-old Vita is the daughter of two prominent scientists. When her unique ability to project her consciousness onto different planes without aid is discovered, the ambitious Director takes over her development, and he wants to see just how far she can go.

Succeeding where others have failed has a price. A growing population of Shells – people whose minds have shattered from the stress of experimentation – shows just how ruthless the Director can be in pursuit of his goal.

It’s up to Vita’s Processor, young hotshot James, to catch her before she breaks.
But he’s keeping a dangerous secret.
With the Director’s tasks getting more and more impossible, James’s growing affection for her, and the sudden appearance of a mysterious stranger, Vita’s mind is reeling.
Someone is playing games with her.
A game where the loser ends up shattered.
Vita must make the choice:
Continue risking her life
or make an unprecedented escape?

Excerpt:
He is watching her every move.
Through a computer screen.
Connected to sensors.
Feeding him the images from her brain.
She’s a bronze, wild-haired statue surrounded by nothing but glowing white sand and inky skies. A twitch and the sand rises to meet her delicate fingertips.
His breath catches. She’s doing it.
Her mind calls the sand to pile beneath her feet and it eagerly does her bidding, transforming into an ephemeral stairway to the stars. While slowly ascending, her dark eyes sparkle with delight. Her breath catches.
She’s doing it.
Deposited gently back to the earth, she extends an arm and the grains form a twirling tendril synchronizing with her movement.
“You don’t need to use your arms.” George, the boy’s mentor, reprimands the girl loudly across the room. “Use only your mind.” A bit gentler.
Her hand drops.
She stills.
The sand stills.
Fiery red streaks cut through the landscape, blinding the onlookers. When the scene rests, jaws drop. She has changed the landscape from a night desert to a balmy sunny day on the beach.
“How did she-”
“Shh!” His mentor interrupts him and begins feverishly taking down notes. “Record! Record!”
The boy fumbles with the controls, not willing to look away, and his hands finally find his target.
On the beach, the water reaches to tickle her bare toes. The girl’s eyes blink hard against the sunlight’s assault, and she lets out a whoop. Her hands fly to her laughing mouth and she is pure joy. Without reservation, she rushes into the salty brine, splashing enthusiastically and plunging herself under the surface. As she rises, her eyes look down at her body and examine her handiwork.
The boy blushes. Positively every inch of her is soaked. Dark hair trails down her shoulders and arms to her white gown that clings to her form. Before he can look away, she throws her body down and allows the waves to push her closer to shore. Mercifully, she is focused on the bright landscape once again.
His eyes narrow.
Her eyes narrow.
What is that?
“Vita!” A deep voice calls, jolting the old man out of his work.
A dark being has emerged on the beach. The girl has frozen.
“Vita!” George calls to her, trying to dislodge her consciousness.
Her hazel-green eyes fill to the brim and she has never seemed so small to him as when she whispers, “I love you”. The boy pushes one last button. Fracture.

Excerpt:
Note: This is an unedited excerpt and the final published version will be slightly altered.

Ax and Izzy are ascending the walkway into the belly of the ship, and I trail behind them. A welcome, familiar face is waiting to greet me at the top of the steps. Fern leans against the railing, her usual sunny face obscured behind a blanket of worry. Spotting me, she brightens for a nanosecond until she takes in my transparent ‘prisoner’ status.
She skips toward us with purpose. “What the hell?” She pierces Haydn with a murderous glare, planting her hands on her slim hips.
“Don’t. Interfere.” He growls out a warning as he pushes past her, hauling me along for the ride.
I shrug my shoulders as I eyeball my friend. “Don’t ask me for an explanation. No one is even speaking to me.”
“This is completely ridiculous, and totally unnecessary,” Fern yells as she stalks behind us like a miniature tornado.
“Babe,” Rylan says, stalling on the steps above us. “Let’s just get to the cabin and we’ll clear everything up.”
Haydn snorts and shakes his head. I deliberately impale him with my penetrating gaze, willing him to look at me so he can absorb the full glare of my frustration. But he’s as stubborn as ever, and he pretends not to feel my eyes burning a hole through the side of his skull. As I continue to stare at him—noting the ashen pallor of his skin, and how his once shorn hair has grown out, now curling and twisting around his ears and over his neck—I wonder if I’ve ever really known him at all. Or if he has ever truly known me.
Because if he did, he would know not to fear me. That there’s no need to treat me like this.

TFP Teaser 2

My Review:
This was a great read, and I’m sorry to see this series ending.

This book picks up about a year after book 1. General Riven is back in the Otherworld trying to track down her errant father before he can get up to more mischief and mayhem. Caden is on the throne back in Neospes so our couple is separated by loyalty and duty. However, old foes have arisen from the ashes and are attempting to destroy everything the king has been painstakingly rebuilding.

One of the things I enjoy most about this series is the superb tech – it’s creative, well developed and consistently built and described in a way that makes it understandable and credible. It’s more tech-heavy than most other books in this genre but I think that helps make it stand-out from the crowd. The worldbuilding, in general, is imaginative, well-thought-out, and well written.

I adore General Riven. She is one bad-ass ninjata-swinging cyborg warrior! She kicks some serious butt in this book and I loved all the action and fight scenes. Having indulged her human side in book 1, and fallen for Caden, she struggles at times to keep her emotions in check. Especially when she finds out what Caden has agreed with a neighboring nation in return for their help in defeating their enemies. I don’t think I would have liked Riven as a character if she didn’t have this softer, more emotional, more human side. She was well-rounded.

Caden is just, ah, swoon, a great guy! I love his confidence and his sacrifice and how much he loved Riven when she turned gung-ho. Rather than feeling inferior, as a lot of guys might, he thought it was hot!

It’s easy to tell from the title who the main villain is, so it was no surprise when he showed up seeking vengeance. Parts of the plot were predictable in that regard, however, as the story progressed more tension and suspense was added and it soon became difficult to tell who could be trusted.

The pacing was off at the start of the book and it was slow and dragged in parts. But the second half more than made up for that, and the action ramped up a notch or two. The last third was nailbiting and chock-full of ‘edge of the seat’ suspense and intrigue. Awesome!

I enjoyed the writing and it was well edited.

I was a little surprised when I got to the end to see that it appears to have concluded. I definitely think there was enough mileage to stretch to another book. I’m actually sad to say goodbye to Riven and Caden as I enjoyed their characters immensely. I would recommend this book to fans of sci-fi/dystopia/paranormal romance.

Thanks to the publicist and publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

TFP Teaser 5

Excerpt:
As the last two people disappear behind Caden and his two Faction guards in a blue haze, I take a breath and hit the coordinates on the keypad.
Era’s eyes meet mine. Even in a wheelchair she still looks fierce. “Remember your promise.”
I’m not sure whether she means my promise to not get in the way or my promise to defend Neospes with my life. Maybe they’re one and the same. “I remember.”
I hit ENTER.
The wind sucks at my gut, pulling me in toward my belly-button as if every part of my body is dissolving and coalescing into that one point. I keep my eyes open for as long as possible, watching time elongate on all sides before the wormhole breaks me into a million pieces. The nanobes harden around my cells, making them impervious to the gravitational changes in pressure. For a second, I feel invincible.
Unbreakable.
At the midpoint of the transition, all is silent, like being in the center of a storm before things start picking up. I’m snapped back together again, disparate cells rushing together toward the whole. As I exit the jump, everything explodes into motion at once.
Voices are coming at me from every direction—screaming and yelling. My ninjatas are out of their harness and in my hands before I can blink. The hot glint of metal reflects o the bodies surrounding us, the sour scent of rotting flesh filling the air. Reptiles—hundreds of them.

Review: The Revolution of Ivy (The Book of Ivy #2) by Amy Engel

The Revolution of IvyTitle: The Revolution of Ivy
Author: Amy Engel
Series: The Book of Ivy #2
Rating: 3 stars
Genres: Science Fiction/ Dystopia

Ivy Westfall is beyond the fence and she is alone. Abandoned by her family and separated from Bishop Lattimer, Ivy must find a way to survive on her own in a land filled with countless dangers, both human and natural. She has traded a more civilized type of cruelty–forced marriages and murder plots–for the bare-knuckled brutality required to survive outside Westfall’s borders.

But there is hope beyond the fence, as well. And when Bishop reappears in Ivy’s life, she must decide if returning to Westfall to take a final stand for what she believes is right is worth losing everything she’s fought for.

My Review:
I really enjoyed The Book of Ivy, and I was looking forward to reading the second installment. Where Book 1 was very character-driven and the romance was slow-burning, and I loved that, I was expecting plenty of action in this book, but, for me, it fell a little short of the mark.

Without a doubt, Bishop Lattimer is the star of this show. God, I love him! He is mature and selfless and so patient with Ivy, even when she is wrecking his (and my) head. Ivy showed great strength at the start of this book, and she proved she was a real fighter, but her attitude toward Bishop really irritated me. When he first showed up she was so ungrateful, and the poor boy had sacrificed everything for her! I love how he supports her even though he doesn’t always agree with her. He was often the calm, confident voice of reason. As a male lead, I found his character very refreshing and quite a change from a lot of the male characters in popular YA books. It’s a pity we didn’t get any scenes in his perspective. I would have loved that!

Eventually, they got their act together, and I loved seeing them as a real team. That was one of my favorite parts of the entire book. I didn’t feel like a hell of a lot happened until the last third of the book. Then the pace and suspense picked up, and it was more exciting and less predictable.

I hated that Ivy was putting her safety and that of Bishop and their friends at risk for her father and sister, but the logic behind her decision-making was believable and consistent with her character.

I thought the world beyond the fence was dull and underdeveloped, and I wish the author had done more with it.

The writing is excellent, and I really enjoy Amy’s style. I will definitely check out whatever she produces next.

Overall, this was an enjoyable enough read, mainly thanks to the delectable Bishop. While there were aspects I was disappointed with, it was still a decent, quick read.

Review: Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4) by Marissa Meyer

Rating: 5 stars
Genres: Science Fiction/ fairytale retelling

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

My Review:
This was an excellent conclusion to a superbly crafted series. Boy was this book long! It’s the second long book I’ve read in a row (the other was the sublime Oblivion) and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. I loved every minute of it.

One of the things I love the most about this series is Marissa’s ability to develop so many different characters and give them all a unique voice. This could have all gone terribly wrong, but it didn’t, and each chapter flowed smoothly even with the POV changes. I read a lot of books narrated from one or two characters perspectives and this was a very refreshing change. She also gave me 4, yes, FOUR, different romances to root for. Pure heaven. All the romances were so sweet and I was praying that all our couples got their HEA.

This book was about so much more than romance, though. It was a race against evil to reinstate Cinder as the rightful Lunar heir, and thwart Queen Levana’s despicable plans. The plot was full of twists and turns and though I knew it was all going to work out fine in the end, I honestly couldn’t have predicted the journey.

The ending was great, even if I did want more! I would love a novella set a few years in the future to show where each of our couples are. Pretty please, Marissa?

This series is such an imaginative take on the classic fairytales we all know and love, and I’m in awe of this author’s ability to develop such a fantastic world with amazingly different, complex characters and put her own unique spin on the classic stories.

I also adore her writing. In my opinion, each book in this series is better than the last. If you haven’t yet checked out this series – you should! I’ve bought the collection for my niece for Christmas and I just know she’s going to love them as much as I have.

Incredible ending to an incredible series. I’m so sad it’s over, but look forward to whatever Marissa produces next.
