The sequel to the sci-fi hit Forget Tomorrow is a twisting, turning roller-coaster ride—the perfect sci-fi futuristic read.

Seventeen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries — if only she’d let TechRA study her. But after they kidnapped and experimented on her as a child, cooperating with the scientists is the last thing Jessa would do.

But when she discovers the past isn’t what she assumed, Jessa must join forces with budding scientist Tanner Callahan to rectify a fatal mistake made ten years ago. She’ll do anything to change her past — even if it means aligning herself with the enemy she swore to defeat.

My Review:
Remember Yesterday is the next instalment in the Forget Tomorrow series by Pintip Dunn. I liked the first book and after that horrific ending I was excited to get stuck into the next book. However, I felt an immediate disconnect when I opened my Kindle to discover this book was narrated by Jessa ten years later. Now, this does make sense on one level (don’t want to spoil the story so I’m being vague on purpose) but I still felt let-down. Not sure the author could have written it any other way though.

I missed Logan so much in this book, but Tanner was an awesome male substitute. Jess was probably more likable than Callie as the MC but it did take me some time to warm up to these characters and this story.

The first half dragged for me and I felt the story was too similar to the first book but things really ramped up a few notches in the second half and I became immersed in the plot and addicted to the characters. The end few chapters were exhilarating and I was totally hooked. The plot was a lot less predictable in the second half and I really enjoyed it.

Now I love Jess and Tanner and I’m so happy with the reemergence of some of my fav characters toward the end.

I adore Pintip’s style of writing and I have no issues there. Her world building is decent and well crafted as was character development.

In summary, after a bit of a disconnect and a slow start, I became engrossed in the story and the characters lives and I’m definitely invested in continuing this series.

Actual rating 3.75 stars.

Excerpt:
I lift my eyes to meet his, and I reach into the future—his future. The vision pours into me. The future Tanner grabs me and kisses me. Without warning, without hesitation. It is hot and searing and exquisite. And I like it. Oh, how I like it.
“No!” I fall out of the vision and scoot away from him, so far that I approach the edge of the platform. My pulse is thundering; my nerves are jumping. Oh, Fates. What’s wrong with me? Is it because I don’t want him to kiss me? Or because I want it too much?
His eyes turn watchful. “Come back here, Jessa. You’re too close to the sky.”
I look into the open space, fluffy with wads of cotton-ball clouds. I take a breath, hoping to inhale some of the sky’s serenity. He doesn’t know about the kiss. Why would he? In the vision, he acted impulsively, without premeditation. The desire to kiss me hasn’t arisen in him yet. Maybe I can prevent it from cropping up altogether.
“Look, you don’t want to kiss me,” I babble, staying where I am. And hope I sound more reasonable than I feel. “It’s only because we talked about kissing the other day. When you talk about something, you give it life. Make it real. Like an annoying song you can’t get out of your head.”
He creeps toward me, his eyes flicking between my face and the sky. “So you can’t get the idea of kissing me out of your head?”
“I said it was annoying. Like a song. Not based on anything real.”
He stops five feet from the edge of the platform. “So let me get this straight. You saw into the future and we kissed. Right?”
“Y-yes,” I stutter, shocked that he guessed the truth so easily. “But it doesn’t have to happen that way,” I add quickly. “As my sister proved, we’re in control of our own fate. We can make any future we wish.”
“Unless this is our Fixed.” His voice is low, rough. And yet, every syllable imprints into my memory forever. “Unless this kiss is so important, it happens in every one of our worlds.”
“It’s just a kiss. How can it be that important?”
His eyes glitter with the challenge. With one last look at the platform’s edge, he crawls to me, slowly but steadily. “The path of our particular world might depend on this kiss. Would you risk our future just to be stubborn?”
And then, he’s right in front of me. He rests his hands lightly on my back. They slide down to my waist, until his fingers brush against the strip of bare skin between my pants and top. I shiver, and my skin pebbles into a million goose bumps. He pulls me against him. So much of my body is touching his that I can’t think; I can’t breathe. All I can do is feel. His trembling breath. My hammering heart. His shaking hands—or hell, maybe that’s me, vibrating against his touch.
Our lips are inches apart. Time blends together. You couldn’t move me from this spot if the world were crashing down around us.
“I thought I wasn’t your type,” I whisper.
“You’re not,” he says. “But for the fate of our world, I’m willing to make the sacrifice.”
And then, he closes the gap between us.

About The Heir and the Human

The Heir and the HumanThe Heir and the Human (The Saven series #3.1)
by Siobhan Davis

Axton’s existence was a lonely one until his mother brought Sadie into his life. Now, she’s the center of his universe, and he’ll do everything in his power to protect her.

But Griselda’s evil plans cast a dark shadow over their love, threatening the future he so desperately craves. With separation looming, Ax is preparing to sacrifice everything for the girl he loves. It’s a high-stakes gamble, and he needs to stay ahead of the game if he’s to outsmart his conniving mother.

Sadie has been his savior.

Now it’s his turn to save her.

Note from the author:
This optional novella relays Axton and Sadie’s backstory, and it is narrated solely from Ax’s point of view.

Excerpt:

I step toward the railing as a lone figure materializes out of the corner of my eye.
Logan’s head whips up, and he sends me a startled look. Without hesitation, he advances toward me and I inwardly cuss. Propping my elbows up on the railing, I gaze upon the eerie blank canvas outside.
“I didn’t take you for a rule breaker,” Logan says, leaning over the railing alongside me.
“I could say the same about you.” I send him a sharp look, unsure if he’s teasing me or not.
“Yeah, ordinarily I’m not, but I like to sneak up here every year. It’s quiet, peaceful. Helps me deal with the memories.” His Adam’s apple jumps in his throat.
I hadn’t thought about that. How hard it must be for him to return here, year after year, knowing that it was among the last moments he spent with his mom. According to rumors, Queen Tayla was killed mere hours after returning with Logan from the Heir’s Summit.
“I’m sorry.” I’m not sure why I said that. Perhaps it’s because subconsciously I’m hyper aware of all the things I owe him an apology for.
He shrugs. “I thought it would get easier but every year is as hard as the previous year. I can’t help thinking of all the different ways it could’ve gone.”
“I can relate.” Although I haven’t lost a parent, it often feels like that. I’ve never stopped mourning the “idea” of my father. Never stopped pining for motherly affection. I’m pathetic, I know.
Logan opens his mouth to say something but clamps it shut again. We stand, side by side, staring out into the gloomy blackness surrounding us, not speaking. After a while, Logan twists around to face me. “What’s it like to be in love?”
My eyes pop wide at the drastic change in subject. “What?”
“You never even glance at any of the girls here. And I’ve heard what some of the others have said over the years, about you being in love with your mate. Is it true?”
Damned fate. Of all the times to ask me this. Why, all of a sudden, is he so interested in me and Sadie? Does he know something? Has he discovered Sadie’s identity?
I fold my arms across my chest as I pin him with a suspicious look. “Why do you ask?”
“I’ve never felt anything even close to love,” he admits. I’m not that surprised. While Logan has his fair share of admirers, and I’ve seen him indulge on more than one occasion, he always gives the impression that he could take it or leave it. There is a faraway look in his eye. “I always hoped I’d get to experience true love. But my father is starting to put pressure on me to pick a bride, and based on what I’d seen of my parent’s marriage, I don’t have high hopes. But I heard that you were actually in love with the girl chosen for you, and”—he shrugs—“I guess that gives me some hope.”
I turn and face the railing, unable to look him in the eye. I don’t respond. There are no words of comfort I can provide.
“Why do we hate one another?” he offers after a bit.
I shrug, not even looking at him.
“That’s very ignorant, even for you.” A snide layer slips into his tone.
“What do you want me to say, Logan?” I eyeball him. “It’s just one of those things.” Oh, and yeah, I’ve stolen your girl, and my mother wants to end you sometime soon.
“I remember what I thought of you the first time I saw you,” he continues. I’m expecting him to say how much he pitied poor bastard me. So, I’m almost knocked off my feet when he replies completely differently. “I couldn’t shake the feeling that you had taken something of mine. Something you had no right to. It’s lingered over the years, that all-consuming feeling. And I feel it now. What are you hiding, Axton? What do you have that’s mine?”

Succeeding where others have failed has a price. A growing population of Shells – people whose minds have shattered from the stress of experimentation – shows just how ruthless the Director can be in pursuit of his goal.

It’s up to Vita’s Processor, young hotshot James, to catch her before she breaks.
But he’s keeping a dangerous secret.
With the Director’s tasks getting more and more impossible, James’s growing affection for her, and the sudden appearance of a mysterious stranger, Vita’s mind is reeling.
Someone is playing games with her.
A game where the loser ends up shattered.
Vita must make the choice:
Continue risking her life
or make an unprecedented escape?

Excerpt:
He is watching her every move.
Through a computer screen.
Connected to sensors.
Feeding him the images from her brain.
She’s a bronze, wild-haired statue surrounded by nothing but glowing white sand and inky skies. A twitch and the sand rises to meet her delicate fingertips.
His breath catches. She’s doing it.
Her mind calls the sand to pile beneath her feet and it eagerly does her bidding, transforming into an ephemeral stairway to the stars. While slowly ascending, her dark eyes sparkle with delight. Her breath catches.
She’s doing it.
Deposited gently back to the earth, she extends an arm and the grains form a twirling tendril synchronizing with her movement.
“You don’t need to use your arms.” George, the boy’s mentor, reprimands the girl loudly across the room. “Use only your mind.” A bit gentler.
Her hand drops.
She stills.
The sand stills.
Fiery red streaks cut through the landscape, blinding the onlookers. When the scene rests, jaws drop. She has changed the landscape from a night desert to a balmy sunny day on the beach.
“How did she-”
“Shh!” His mentor interrupts him and begins feverishly taking down notes. “Record! Record!”
The boy fumbles with the controls, not willing to look away, and his hands finally find his target.
On the beach, the water reaches to tickle her bare toes. The girl’s eyes blink hard against the sunlight’s assault, and she lets out a whoop. Her hands fly to her laughing mouth and she is pure joy. Without reservation, she rushes into the salty brine, splashing enthusiastically and plunging herself under the surface. As she rises, her eyes look down at her body and examine her handiwork.
The boy blushes. Positively every inch of her is soaked. Dark hair trails down her shoulders and arms to her white gown that clings to her form. Before he can look away, she throws her body down and allows the waves to push her closer to shore. Mercifully, she is focused on the bright landscape once again.
His eyes narrow.
Her eyes narrow.
What is that?
“Vita!” A deep voice calls, jolting the old man out of his work.
A dark being has emerged on the beach. The girl has frozen.
“Vita!” George calls to her, trying to dislodge her consciousness.
Her hazel-green eyes fill to the brim and she has never seemed so small to him as when she whispers, “I love you”. The boy pushes one last button. Fracture.

Ax and Izzy are ascending the walkway into the belly of the ship, and I trail behind them. A welcome, familiar face is waiting to greet me at the top of the steps. Fern leans against the railing, her usual sunny face obscured behind a blanket of worry. Spotting me, she brightens for a nanosecond until she takes in my transparent ‘prisoner’ status.
She skips toward us with purpose. “What the hell?” She pierces Haydn with a murderous glare, planting her hands on her slim hips.
“Don’t. Interfere.” He growls out a warning as he pushes past her, hauling me along for the ride.
I shrug my shoulders as I eyeball my friend. “Don’t ask me for an explanation. No one is even speaking to me.”
“This is completely ridiculous, and totally unnecessary,” Fern yells as she stalks behind us like a miniature tornado.
“Babe,” Rylan says, stalling on the steps above us. “Let’s just get to the cabin and we’ll clear everything up.”
Haydn snorts and shakes his head. I deliberately impale him with my penetrating gaze, willing him to look at me so he can absorb the full glare of my frustration. But he’s as stubborn as ever, and he pretends not to feel my eyes burning a hole through the side of his skull. As I continue to stare at him—noting the ashen pallor of his skin, and how his once shorn hair has grown out, now curling and twisting around his ears and over his neck—I wonder if I’ve ever really known him at all. Or if he has ever truly known me.
Because if he did, he would know not to fear me. That there’s no need to treat me like this.

True Calling FREE to download this week only

TRUE CALLING FREE TO DOWNLOAD ON AMAZON UNTIL APRIL 17TH

“True Calling is a dystopian-sci-fi-romance that is FABULOUS! Siobhan did not fail to impress me with this debut novel.” Ashley Colby. The Caffeinated Booknerd

If you loved Matched, The Selection, The 100 or The Hunger Games then you will love True Calling. Pick up a copy while it’s free! And don’t forget you can download a free Kindle app from Amazon – for iPAD, tablet, desktop, laptop or mobile phone.

This is the second edition released in Jan 2015 so if you have already read TC this is a good opportunity to download the latest version free of charge!

Why I love Science Fiction

The Oxford Dictionary defines Science Fiction as, “Fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.”

I’ve been an avid science fiction fan since I was a little girl, though it is fair to say I was mainly into films and TV shows back then. I can still remember going to the cinema to see the ‘Empire Strikes Back’ when I was only 8 or 9, and I was hooked on the Star Wars series from that point. My mom loves to recount tales of how I used to hide behind the sofa, with a cushion obscuring my face, as I braved glimpses at Dr. Who on the TV. She says I refused to allow let her switch it off, though it clearly terrified me! (On a side note, excellent parenting Mom!!)

I’ve been a voracious reader my whole-life, and I exasperate my husband as I constantly have a book in my hand or my trusty kindle by my side. However, I only got into reading science fiction as an adult. A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley was one of the first classic sci-fi books that I read, and it is still up there at the top of my list of all time sci-fi greats. Written in 1931 it describes a frightening vision of the future, and I think Mr. Huxley was ahead of his time in his thinking, and analysis. I also love The Hunger Games series; those books just blew me away.

When I first started writing fiction, in my early thirties, I wrote lots of chicklit/romance, and I secretly harbored an ambition to write crime/thrillers. Mostly because those were the genre’s I was reading back then. Around this time, I commenced employment with an IT company and my interest in technology piqued. Then I got sucked into the YA genre, and I’ve read lots of dystopian science fiction and for me, and my writing, it was organic from that point.

In 2010, the CEO of the company I work for gave me a book to read called the 2020 Workplace. It is written by Jeanne C. Meister and Karie Willyerd and is intended for human resource professionals like myself. Essentially it is about innovative ways to attract, retain and develop the employees of the future. It describes the future workplace in some detail and draws an analysis between technological advancements of the last ten years, and planned developments for the next ten years. To see how far we have advanced in such a short period is breath-taking, as is visualizing the future and how far we will develop technologically in my lifetime. While this book added value in my corporate life, it also set my creative juices flowing.

I love imagining what the futuristic world will be like, and trying to second guess how technological and medical advancements will shape the culture and society of the future. The universe is vast, and so much is still unknown and unexplored and as a writer, that opens up limitless creative opportunities. I am particularly enamoured with stories that are set in space and those involving alien races—I think it all stems back to my early childhood obsession with the Star War series. To think that regular space-travel is being realized during my life-time is truly incredible.

A good science fiction story for me (whether it is a book, TV series or movie) has to strike the right balance between technology and human emotions.  Particularly, showcasing how human nature evolves and deals with advances in technology and medicine, and the impact of that on human relationships and their environment. Unless it has a good mix of those things, it will not hold my attention for long. In writing True Calling I’ve tried to achieve these aims, and completely given in to my reader-sci-fi-geekiness.

I don’t think I’ll ever tire of science fiction stories and with some interesting new releases coming to our cinema screens and bookshelves soon, I know I’ll have plenty to indulge my passion.
